I don't know what has happened to this place. The fish, which used to be pristine, is now clearly not fresh and the presentations are sloppy. Such a shame.

Went here with a group of co-workers for the first time & it was absolutely delicious! We all ordered various kobe bento boxes & the quality of the tonkatsu, chicken teriyaki, sushi/sashimi, gyoza & salad was perfect. Not only was the food great, but the prices were awesome too. The decorations inside the restaurant were very unique and our server was very polite and attentive. The food came out all at the same time & the sake went well with the food. We're definitely coming back :)

I was one of the first patrons here on a weeknight, but around 6:30 more folks started piling in. Ordered several maki rolls, a tempura shrimp bento and a scallop handroll. Overall food was ok, but nothing really stood out. Service was decent, but the lone waitress had some language barrier issues. First time in the area, so not sure about their competition, but seems like a decent place. Would come back only if nothing else is available in the vicinity.

2.5 stars It was a very last minute decision to have dinner here; the experience was mixed. Without reservation, we waited a few minutes for the table to be set up which was fine. At almost 8PM on a Wednesday night, the place was still pretty full. Our waitress was a sweet young woman, very friendly but clearly inexperienced and not knowledgeable about the food. We ordered 2 of the spicy pork ramen, a shrimp tempura dinner, a chirashi sushi dinner and 2 rolls to share. The barley tea was nice and hot to start, we each got a bowl of miso soup which came hot, tasty but not too salty. Then the dishes came in a random order; we had to remind our waitress of the salads and for some reason still came one short, Shirashi sushi dinner - served in a lager plate which made the portion size of assorted sashimi over rice seem small. Perhaps we shouldn't expect too much for $15 Taxas roll was not bad but not very big; the other roll was kind of skinny and not very memorable at all. Not impressed. Shrimp tempura dinner was decent; 6 fried prawns for $12 and tasted pretty good 2 of us ordered the spicy pork raman, a good size pot filled with plenty of chewy noodles, pieces of pork, some ground meat, corn and seaweed. The portions were generous especially compare to the sushi's. The broth was tasty and spicy but the pork slices were tough and the seaweeds had too much of an ocean smell. There was also a funky smell in the air, we weren't sure what it was but didn't help the appetite. We probably will not rush back anytime soon.

Again, after reading rave reviews on Yelp we decided to check this place out for lunch. We ordered the Foster City Roll and the lunch bento box with short ribs. The sushi was pretty good - nothing amazing, but good. The bento box was pretty standard although I didn't care for the dressing. The short ribs had fantastic flavor but they were pretty tough. The staff was nice but it was hard to get their attention once the lunch rush came in.

went last night and ended up with a tummy ache, I did snarf 2 rolls and a handroll though. I had the firecracker roll, which was ok, a little spice to the tuna, but average. and attempted to try the big island roll but the brought the gross baked bay island roll, which is a warm california roll basically, egh. I hope they change the name of those rolls because they almost mixed it up with my friend too despite she even pointed it out on the menu. The salmon skin handroll was the worst ive had, dry tiny strips of salmon skin, no sauce, and too much rice. but unfortunately wasnt impressed overall, I would still meander downtown sm for my sushi fix.

I like this spot. It's right on the water, the food is very good and the staff are very kind and courteous. I've eaten there and had take out too and have always been satisfied. The atmosphere is nice...not too much over the top. ...just what I like. Everyone was friendly and it really made me want to hang out. Hope to be back to Kobe's again soon. We usually eat a lot of sashimi and it was very, very fresh. Loved it.

I came here with some coworkers for lunch. It was a very nice, warm sunny day so we were seated outside and it was gorgeous having the view of the water. The food was good. I had they dragon roll and like someone mentioned, I love the smaller slices of the sushi. I didn't feel the need to excise my sushi like a science experiment to eat them. I also like the price. I went to a sushi place in San Mateo the day before where they charge $5 more for the same sushi. What I did not like about this place is the service. Our food took a long time to arrive despite coming to the restaurant early and ahead of the crowd. The waitress was very snooty. Not really sure what her problem was but it seems very normal for her. She had a scowl on her face each time you ask for a low sodium soy sauce or even the check. She needs to lighten up or stop working in customer service. If you're coming here for lunch and need to be back to work for a meeting or something, be sure you have plenty of time or keep on top of getting your food and check from the staff.

Service has gotten better within the last year! Portions are still huge, and they give salad with udon. I love Japanese salad dressing! Yum!

I love this place! The sushi is to die for. I went there for the first time on March 6th and had a great experience. The restaurant is small and cozy and the decor is beautiful. They also have out door dining. The sushi chef Sam was a true artist. You have to try the pink dragon! Mmm YUM!! We posted pictures of the Pink Dragon and the Sukiyaki. Its the 58th & 59th picture. :)

Small place. Decor is cute. The sushi tastes good overall but the portion sizes are tiny.

I want to put a"Zero" star if there is an option. This was my first and my last time going there. The restaurant looked good from the outside, so my wife and I sat down for lunch, about 4-5 tables, Greeted, got our tea and menu. We ordered our food with the waitress(white female). We got our soup and salad really quick, we started eating that while we waited for our food to come. Waited, waited, we waited for about 20 minutes, so I asked the same waitress who took our order to check on our food. Without saying anything to us and no facial expression, she walked away to the kitchen and came out to tell us that our food was coming. So we waited another 10 minutes, nothing came out, so I asked her again, same attitude "walked away to check". Replied " food is coming". Finally, another 5 minutes, the food had arrived after more than 30 minutes of waiting, the waitress still had not yet apologized that we had to wait that long for our food, and that was when we got up and left. Most of the working people only have 1 hour for lunch, to have to wait for food for more than 30 minutes is not acceptable. We still need time to eat and drive back to work. We will never go back again! waited too long and bad service by the waitress.

I wish they didn't have to call their place a JAPANESE restaurant, because it's anything but. FOOD: The overly salty miso soup was the first sign of danger. The chicken sukiyaki was too sweet. The spicy pork was spicy, but there was something horribly wrong with the taste. I had never eaten anything like that in Japan. Plus, while the waitress had told us that their pork was extremely lean, what came out were pieces of fatty meat. (She later explained that the quality varied depending on that day.) It was wrong of my husband to order spicy tuna roll to begin with, and I stayed away from it completely given that I shouldn't be eating raw fish in the first place... OTHERS: The decor is beautifully set up, and the service is alright. The location is perfect in terms of parking and convenience. I just wish they didn't have to call their food "Japanese" cuisine. SUM: 1.5 stars, rounded to 2...because at least we didn't get food poisoning like Ken K. did!

One of my favorite sushi places! Very cute restaurant with friendly service. You must try their Volcano Roll - yummy! Their entrees are also very good - the salad dressing is delicious (I'm a big fan of salads at Japanese restaurants) and the onions that come with the teriyaki chicken is so good that I had to embarassingly ask them to leave the plate because I wanted to pick at all the leftover pieces. Hehehe... I came here for my bday with my family a year ago and they also gave these yummy ice cream...things...=)

I went during lunch, so as people noted it can get busy during the week between 12 and 1, and service can sometimes suffer. I had to wait about 5-10 minutes which was expected. At one point our male waiter disappeared for a really long period of time, during which we needed more drinks and more food so we had to flag down a waitress (who was awesome) to order more food and drinks. The food was great, I loved the Tuna Jalapeno App was the bomb, everything was fresh and delicious. Staff was nice. I'd like to see them step up their service a notch, and have the staff check back with their tables now and again. I would like to eat here again, outside of lunch hour!

Great service, cute trendy place. I had lunch here with my husband at the peak of lunch hour. It was great to be seated so quickly :) However, Kobe was lacking... Small in many ways... the establishment itself as well as the portions! From the small cuts of sashimi to the small tables it was a bit disappointing. I was turned off by conversation of work drama from patrons next to us and also turned off by the tiny bites of food! Then again, for $10, it wasn't too bad for lunch. I would still come back.

We originally wanted to try another sushi place, but it was closed for the holidays, so we came here. It was easy to find, in a shopping plaza right off the intersection, and there was tons of parking available, which was great. Inside, the atmosphere is quite charming. It's a small restaurant, but there's a sushi bar that sits six or eight people, and a bunch of tables backing up to two walls of windows with views of a small plaza outside. The menu is also fairly extensive - there are sushi and sashimi combos, bento boxes for those who like Japanese food but don't love raw fish, and four full pages of rolls, including at least a dozen vegetarian options. I ordered the Morticia Spidey Roll and the Sushi Bento Box, which had six nigiri and six pieces of sashimi. The roll was very flavorful and fresh, as was the fish, but I was disappointed by the portions. The nigiri were half the size of what I'm used to at my regular sushi place in Fremont, and the roll was only five pieces as opposed to six, eight, or even twelve. Everything was delicious, but for the price, I was expecting a little more. The only true downside to this place is that there's no bathroom for customers in the restaurant. I asked to use the restroom, they handed me a key, and said to follow the sidewalk down past [something the waiter mumbled]. I figured that even though I didn't get the greatest directions, I could wing it - how far away could the bathroom be? Pretty far, apparently, because I never found it. I got halfway through the shopping center before I gave up and walked back to the restaurant. It wasn't the end of the world, but I can certainly imagine some scenarios where that walk would be problematic. All said, this place is doable, but I don't think I'd make it a regular spot.

I'm not a sushi kind-of-girl....but this doesn't stop me from going to Japanese restaurants!! I always order the same thing - Chicken Katsu, which comes with Miso Soup, salad, and rice. Super yummy, but if you're looking for a healthier option, try the Chicken Teriyaki, which comes on a hot skillet :) Kobe is a little overpriced, but the portions are good. This is not an "I'm in and then out" place at all and sometimes it takes a while for the waitresses to come over and simply take your order. The atmosphere is pretty cool and calm, though.

Good rolls and teriyaki beef. I would recommend the Lion King roll. Service can be slow when it's busy. Seems to be understaffed at times.

Best lychee saketini ever. Great food with a slight fusion of Korean. Awesome!!! Waitresses were very nice too! Very cozy place where lots of locals meet for after hours drinks and eats.

I love Kobe, but I can't give them five stars because of the location ( corner of nondescript shopping center parking lot almost on the Foster City waterfront, but not quite ), I also dislike that they don't have their own bathroom (take the key down the hall...) The interior is clean and stylish, the wait staff is awesome, and the food is great. I almost always get either the Cherry Blossom Roll, or the Orange Blossom Roll which is the inverse. Healthy, good portion, delicious. The Teriyaki Sake (charbroiled salmon) is also a favorite. For high end rolls, the Nareto (maguro, crab, prawn, avocado, cucumber) is great, but a bit small (and expensive) A nice touch is they give you complimentary tea, miso or salad, and sometimes a dessert as well.

I have been here a couple of times recently. The food has been excellent. The service is amazing. The atmosphere is great for a Sushi Restaurant. Even the glasses have a lot of character. I am rating on lunch time visits. We ordered the seaweed salad, the Tako Sunomono, the oysters which were infused with vinegar and spice, the dragon roll, the spicy tuna roll, and gyoza. All of which were very good. They have a pretty good sized menu and I have yet to find anything bad. I will be back to try out some more dishes.

I don't know what has taken me so long to review this place! Especially since I tried it on a whim based on their stellar Yelp reviews! I've never had a bad meal here, the fish is super fresh and I love their creative take on rolls. I know there are purists out there who probably don't appreciate their amazing take on sushi and that's fine because those people can get a damn good plate of sashimi here instead. Their use of jalapenos is something I personally LOVE! The food is excellent but what really sets them apart is the service. The other night, my hubby and I went in with some pretty strict dietary needs but a strong hankering for sushi. Not only did they get creative and go out of their way to make us what we wanted but our server suggested specials that totally met our needs. I would have never tried the specials as I usually can't decipher the Japanese terms for the different fish, but they were so kind in describing what everything was it made us comfortable ordering something exotic. I now have two new faves - hamachi poppers and hirami carpaccio! I love this place and have turned many people onto it. Even if I didn't live 2 minutes away, I would totally drive here for them. A HUGE THANK YOU to the entire staff for always being attentive, friendly, and making sure we enjoy our meals here.

Hands down, best sushi place for lunch. I was really pleased when my waitress suggested a different type of fish I had never had because I was already getting salmon in my bento box. The one she suggested was even better and I was so impressed! I've had rude encounters with the waitresses before, but overall its understandable because they are always packed at lunch. They are good about keeping your water filled and checking on your table. They will split the check too if you ask ahead of time! i LOVE their bento box and the price! I will continue to come on a weekly basis!

I met my husband here for lunch the other day..got there at 11:45, which is a good thing because the place isn't too big and I hear, it gets crazy busy during lunch. There is outdoor seating and indoor seating. The place is cute and clean. I walked in and was greeted immediately with a warm welcome. They brought me water which was nice because it was warm. The cups there are interesting..you'll know what I'm talking about when you see them. I ordered the sushi lunch plate. Comes with 6 pieces of sashimi and 4 pieces of nigiri. It was very fresh and they put the right amount of wasabi with each nigiri and rice. I'm very picky about my sushi rice, it was perfectly sweet/sour. I also got soup and salad. Salad was good..thank god they don't use iceberg letter, they actually use quality lettuce- romaine! Miso sesame dressing was good and perfectly drizzled, not overload like some places-yuck! The soup was really good..what I really liked about it was that they have enoki mushrooms! I looove those lil caps of happiness. SCORE! def would come again!

I really don't have many good things to say about the dining options in Foster City. Most of them are chain restaurants, close at 8:30, are gross, or some combination of the aforementioned three. Kobe, you are an answered prayer! Not only do they stay open to 9:45 (week nights) to 10 (weekends), which is pushing it in the beloved Ghost Town of Foster City, but the food is phenomenal, the atmosphere is cozy, and the service is AWESOME. (Lisa - I'm talking about you! If you go, ask for her...she's friendly, funny, and knows both the food & sake menu front to back. Plus she never rolls her eyes when I saunter in 10 minutes prior to closing time, major plus!) The 12 pc. Chef's Sashimi special is fairly priced at $19 & the fish is melt-in-your-mouth fresh. I was really impressed. My boyfriend is a fan of speciality rolls and he loved the Double Spicy Tuna (extra spicy) and Texas rolls. I also really enjoyed my seaweed salad. I wish I had some constructive criticism to balance out this love affair of a review, but I don't. 5 stars!

The bento boxes are pretty good, but certainly nothing to be raved about in the San Mateo area. However, we encountered really slow service which was not that acceptable during lunch time. Granted, the restaurant was almost full, but the waitress seemed to enjoy talking to her more regular patrons than serving the others. The menu had some Korean style items on it too, so my guess is, this is not a purebred Japanese place. Not a bad thing at all though, esp. if you dig Korean style sushi or chirashi.

Hamachi Poppers- not on menu, but a MUST order! I also love their varieties of Sake. Super White Tuna when in season is fabulous. My kids love the place and they are very kid friendly and understand how impatient they can be. I try a lot here and I've so far had nothing that I haven't liked. Great Service, lots of choices- FRESH FISH! Try it!

Thank goodness that we have a decent sushi place in Foster City! Now I don't have to trek to San Francisco or Palo Alto/Menlo Park to get my sashimi fix (yes, I am lazy :) I grew up eating sushi during frequent trips to Japan, so I'm rather picky. I could tell that this was a good place when I walked in and there was not the slightest smell of fish (I hate that!) in the restaurant. My friends and ordered an assortment of some straight-up sashimi along with some of their fun-named rolls. I carefully inspected the fish, and it looked good. Tasted fantastic! Kudos to the sushi chef. Another reviewer said this place is pricey. Huh? Not compared to other decent sushi places, it isn't. Portions are ample for the price. Service is great, fast and polite. Check this place out, you won't be sorry!

I have gone to this place more times than I can count!! The food is amazing, and they've recently added more items to the menu. My current favorite is the Snow White roll, absolutely amazing!! Now, I warn you.... if you're going for dinner, get there early, or wait till later. They get crowded fast!! They close between lunch and dinner hours, and open around 5:15pm for dinner. I get there about 4:45 - 5 and wait outside. Don't get me wrong, it's TOTALLY worth the wait! It's just nice not having to wait because it is a small place. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. I prefer inside. For dinner, they always have a fresh flower or two at the table and a tea light candle lit. The flowers are always beautiful, and with the candle, it's just a really nice touch for a wonderful dining experience.

Great sushi with a nice atmosphere one the water. Their nigiri spans from the traditional, to more out of the box (I love their fuji apple roll. Prices are steep, but expected for sushi.

Tried this place last night. Food was pretty good. Solid 3.5 Pros: good tasting sushi, cheaper than most places, volcano roll was delish Cons: smaller portions, had to wait about 10m for my food after my friend got hers, the California rolls tasted...off to me (too much mayo with crab?), smaller selection of specialty rolls that other sushi places.

  • Michelle A.

So many sushi options!!! The most special rolls I have ever seen. We have been here several times and always try to get new ones. Favorites include: mango-a-go go roll, soy shiromashu roll, morticia spidey roll, cherry blossom roll, orange blossom roll, delirious roll, and kamikaze roll. The gyoza, beef teriyaki, and mochi are also great. Their free miso soup is also fantastic! We were not a fan of their yakisoba. The service has always been great here and we love taking our families here when they come to visit. A solid choice for some creative special rolls.

Lunch: Their lunch bento boxes are pretty good deals. You get plenty of food and the food are freshly prepared and well-seasoned. Better than all the places I've tried in Japantown, San Francisco. Dinner: Dinner prices for hot entrees are over double the price of the lunch but you do get almost double the portion of meat and tempura. Food is also freshly prepared. Somehow my boyfriend thinks dinner taste better than lunch. Sushi: A lot of variety of sushi rolls. Portion is kind of small. Price is kind of high. Quality is decent-fairly good. My favorite is the Nareto (sp?) Roll. It's like a California Roll without rice and wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber instead of seaweed. Very refreshing. Their sashimi and nigiri are okay. Everything is made to order. Service: Great. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. Parking: Even though there's a lot, it's often pretty packed. But you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot somewhere in the lot. You might have to park a bit further than desirable though. Restroom: I have not figured out where their restroom is, but it's somewhere outside the restaurant. You have to let a staff know and they'll give you the key.

I recently moved to Foster City and if any of you know from my past reviews I love me some sushi. I have been to many a sushi joint in my days but Kobé takes the bait. I first found this little place on accident, it's stuffed into a corner of a shopping center along the water. The place is fairly small, although I've been to smaller, it still has a wonderful atmosphere. I arrived on a weekday dinner time and was seated promptly by a lovely waitress named Emerald. My friend was with me as well. The menus are very nice and the selection is great, its not your everyday one of the mill sushi house. They have very interesting maki/special rolls, even for the health conscious and gluten free people. My friend and I always enjoy ordering sake when we eat sushi, and fortunately for us we live close enough to walk to Kobé, so we drank our fill. The sushi was incredible, fresh and almost melt in your mouth feel. Since I'm so social, I chatted up the waitress and the rest of the staff, and made some new friends. Although its a bit on the pricey side, it justifies itself with great service and amazing food. This is my new favorite sushi place. Period. Tips: Order the oyster shooters, they are fantastic! Say hello to the owner Jackie Visit often Edit: I really didn't do this place justice with all it's amazing people that work there, i am doing a follow up to my original review ( see above ) but saying a little bit more about how amazing this place is. Let me introduce you to a fantastic bartender here named Jin, with his chiseled good looks and mad bartending skillz his mojitos are amazing. if you like sushi, as you should, then come here, even if you think it's out of your way, it's not. the end

Kobe is a trendy Japanese restaurant at Edgewater Place with above average service but just average food. I would've preferred a little more privacy as we were seated next 2 two other occupied tables while the rest of the restaurant was empty Donburis, while presented nicely, fell short on portion-size. The sushi was average with the white tuna standing above the rest. And the Edgewater Roll was just mediocre. Interestingly enough, we were served a fried rainbow trout on the house. Nice gesture (still can't figure out what it was for b/c none of the other tables got one) but still not enough to give an extra star.

A few of my favorite girls from work took me to a birthday lunch at Kobe today :) Of course, I chose Kobe from its great Yelp reviews... and also my sushi craving... The 5 of us had to wait about 15 minutes for a table due to the lunch bustle at 12:30 pm but we were able to order our lunch while we waited. I chose one of the Bento boxes ($8.95) with chicken teriyaki, rice, california roll, and three types of sashimi. The fish was all pretty fresh and teriyaki was great! All five of us received miso soup and house salad too no matter what we ordered. We all enjoyed our food - others had a full chicken teriyaki order, specialty rolls, and shrimp tempura. The prices were pretty reasonable too though the Bento boxes were definitely the best deals for the price. The decor is cute and our waitress was nice though neither super attentive not talkative. We all look forward to coming back here!

This place was surprisingly good. I came here with my fiance because we did not have cash and the line for Cooking Papa was too long. As we walked in, the ambiance was very mellow and the lights were dim. It is a quaint and small place. The staff were good and checked in here and there throughout our meal. For food, we ordered a sushi combination platter and tonkatsu. We were amazed by their tonkatsu because it doesn't taste oily at all. The fresh sashimi on the sushi was very tender and melted in our mouths. It's slightly pricey but worth it considering it is Japanese food. The portions are not big but it was a perfect fit for the both of us. If you are a big eater, I'd suggest you order more. The items came with soup and a side salad, which is typical of most Japanese meals. There are plenty of parking because the location is within a small shopping area with a communal parking lot. We will definitely go back when we are near. Not sure what we will order next but I did see some specials on the wall. Perhaps I will try those next time and yelp about them.

Went here for lunch... there was maybe 6 other people eating here. There is no reason my bento-box should of taken 45 mins to make!!!! especially when folks are going there for lunch and only have 1 hour it makes it very difficult!! On top of that the food was bland. I love sushi and I've been eating it for more than 20 yrs. This place sucks the tuna was thin and looked like it went threw a meat grinder and the rice was old tasting. For all the good reviews.....you must be friends of the owners try coming up to SF and try some real food!!!!!

We went to try this restaurant since we were craving japanese and base on the yelp reviews. Honestly the service is good but the quality of food is just ok. The sushi are previously frozen and my cook bento box was ok not the greatest and i guess i have high expectations because i know Japaneee food very well.

Food was OK but there is no personality at this place. It's already in the cuts of Foster City tucked away in the corner of a plaza. I guess if you live here, sure, but If I did I would definitely travel a tad bit further to Shiki over by whole foods or just go to Tokie's over there by 7- eleven. Now Tokie's is what's happening and they are even more tucked away. What made me leave before I was ready was that they did not clear anything even though I made it obvious the sake and 1st round of beer was finished. I thought, gosh, what if I order a couple more plates? I'll be completely surrounded by plates, napkins and beer bottles. So not the look I'm going for. So I drank my second beer with no more sushi to follow. I was at the bar, there's hardly any room to begin with, they should be on top of that. Dear Staff, Got Red Bull?

I wanna put down 3.5 stars, but it isn't happening with the 5 star restriction. The hamachi kama? Nom. The three sake taster? Nom Nom. The sashimi combo? Yak yak. The sashimi combo was warm for some reason. I didn't expect that. At all. It was like I was back in elementary school when I heard we were getting chicken fingers for lunch; and I was like, "oh yes! this is going to be the most awethomest day!" .... only to find out they were dry and needed two cartons of milk to wash down. I hate being let down like that. Otherwise, decent ambiance, cocktails, and service.

Really good sushi spot! I met a friend for dinner and we had a great meal. Pros: -It's quiet, cozy and decorated really nice. -The menu selection is really good. -The rolls are really tasty! We had the Foster City Roll, The delirious roll and the California Roll, all were delicious and fresh tasting -Good spot to take someone who maybe doesn't care for sushi, there were a lot of other options, such as udon, etc. Cons: -No bathroom, you have to get the key and walk to another location located within the shopping center. -Service was a little inattentive, but not so much as to deter me from stopping back again very soon.

Excellent Sushi south of "the city" :) This little nook in a strip mall was definitely a surprise. Very tasty. The menu and vibe reminded me of K's Kitchen in SF ( yelp.com/biz/ks-kitchen-… ) but with more roll options. The Texas Roll was excellent. We also had the Pink Roll and the Foster City Roll, also delectable, the Texas roll just stuck in both our minds even after leaving. I also tasted the Firecracker Roll, it was also something I wish I could have ordered...but I was so full already! It's out of my usual way to go, so I don't see myself making a trip out to Foster City just for the Sushi, but if I am in the area again I would definitely hit this place up. Wasn't too big a fan of the Miso, but the excellent rolls and good Sake made up for it.

Kobe is one of my favorite sushi bars! They do everything well; food, service, atmosphere. In a town with very little in the way of great restaurants, Kobe is a star. First, the bar is great, and they offer Orion beer straight from Japan. The restaurant itself is very nice too, it is decorated tastefully, and it is not too big, so it is always buzzing but they turnover well, so not a lot of waiting. The sushi is very fresh, and great exotic rolls, perfect for the sushi purist as well as the more neophite looking for deep fried rolls. And the staff is very friendly also, including Lisa, who has been there a while and is a local. makes sure that regulars are hooked up and happy! If you are over most of the sushi offerings in San Mateo hop over the freeway and check out Kobe, definitely worth it!

Very good quality sushi and sashimi, but I think the Japanese-style bar here is the highlight. On the menu were some drinks with unique names. The one that caught my attention was the watermelon sakitini, obviously a drink using sake make to resemble martini. That's what I ordered because, for some reason, I love drinks and dessert with watermelon as an ingredient. The drink was very good, almost couldn't taste the sake. I'm not sure if that's actually supposed to be good thing, but then who cares. The location is unique in that the restaurant is almost right by the lagoon. It felt good afterwards to sit on a bench looking towards the other side and into the houses across the waterway (or, at least those with lights on because it was dark by then). I've only seen the night view here and to me it's beautiful, but haven't come in daytime yet for a comparison.

My wife and I really like this place, cute décor, charming staff good food and sushi, Recommend this restaurant highly for Japanese food in Foster City. Usually get Soup, salad, hamachi sushi, Foster City Roll and the seafood tempura, this tempura is different than what you might expect it's kind of like a croquette I really enjoy this one so give it a try.

We love this place. It is our go to restaurant when we want something quiet, reliable, quality, and accommodating for our 20-month-old. The sushi is great, may I suggest the cold marinated tofu as an appetizer (the only tofu not fried on the menu). Will keep coming back here. Feels cozy and it's so close to home for us, but yet counts as a night out. The teriyaki stuff is AMAZING as well! Try!

Very good and unique sushi rolls here. I particularly like the "Ring of Fire" roll which has a thin slice of jalapeno on top. Also liked the "Orange Blossom" roll. You can tell that their fish is very fresh. They also can make really good tempura.

Been wanting to find a japanese spot in Foster City for a while not but I always defaulted to tacos for lunch. Today there was something different in the air. I actually got on my computer and looked at my options - I believe this place is one of my two options. I went for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised by the location; even though I live in FC I hardly explore what there is to see around here. Their little place is by the water. Its a pretty small place, but I like the decor inside, saavy. They've got that modern-japanese aesthetic going that you see often in restaurants that are a little more expensive. I was definitely amused by the curvy water glasses! I was really looking for some udon soup, which they have, but I really didnt want to pay dinner prices.... so I opted for a lunch special. I got the teriyaki salmon with miso and gyoza. The gyoza was on the small side, and what happens when you deep fry something that small is you get something that tastes more like chips than a wonton. I didnt really dig the gyoza. The salmon teriyaki with rice was fine. The miso was good to great. I know its hard to go wrong with miso soup but there are actually quite a few different flavors. I like whatever flavor they are using... and they had some of those cool long mushrooms in there - tasty. The service was fine. The price was ok, a little on the high side for lunch. I'll go back and try their udon soup sometime.

Been here several times for lunch but visited for dinner tonight with a coworker who is in town for the week. Although she lives in NYC now, the restaurant still remembers her, greets her by name and immediately brought up a bottle of sake when we sat down ... (apparently I need to dine out with her more often.) We shared the 8 piece sashimi plate - all the fish was very fresh with hearty generous portions. Also got the Foster City roll and the Fire Cracker roll. Both were delicious but if you have to pick one, the fire cracker one is definitely better. Also got the agedashi tofu where they served the sauce on the side ... I generally like my food bathed in sauce, but this was okay too. Everything was great ... but isn't everything after 2 bottles of sake?

We went there dinner and it was very busy. Overall the service is slow but the waitress was trying their best and very friendly. I gave two stars mainly because the quality of their food was poor. It's very salty and portion was really small given the price, especially compared to other Japanese restaurants in Foster City/San Mateo. Nigiri was not very fresh and our lion king roll was so small (can't really call it lion king). Probably won't come here again.

Went there today with couple friends for lunch. This place had been changed several owners. Always a Japanese restaurant for some reason. However, it never worked. Saw a friend's post on Face Book, and decided to go with two friends today. Service was very slow. And the restroom is way outside. ( You have to ask the restaurant for the key to go out of the restaurant. ) Anyay, my gf doesn't eat any spicy food AT ALL, so we asked for a non-spicy Raman. When the food came, you can tell Immediately that the spicy chilly oil was flowing on top of the Raman. So we asked the waitress about that, and her response was: oh , the spicynoil is from the bamboo. We tried our best. Of course, my friend tried to eat it, but for a person who can't handle the spicy food, it's just not working for her. Mine spicy Raman was ok, I had better. And the food took a long time. It just didint work for us.

Eh...wasn't impressed with this place, however I'm a bit of a sushi snob after eating at places like Koo in San Francisco (Check it out on Yelp). An experience that can only be described as euphoric. So, I ordered the Foster City Roll which the waitress mentioned was one of the most popular rolls. I thought it was pretty good with the mixture of fishes and sauce, but in the end was left feeling unsatisfied. Probably because I ordered the Unagi roll hoping for redemption, but the eel roll was worse than the Foster City Roll. The main reason is because the eel just didn't taste fresh. I felt like it was a small step up from the sushi you could get at Safeways. I also thought the service was spotty. The waitresses were friendly and attentive, but I didn't like how in between serving customers, they were chillin at the bar just hanging out and laughing extremely loudly. It was sort of disruptive when you're trying to have a nice quiet dinner after a long days work. Good location, but I probably won't be back here any time soon.

Spotted Kobe after getting foot massages at Oceanic and thought we'd get some take out. The staff and service was great. The ambiance seemed nice while we waited. But I'm giving them one star because my $11 rainbow roll that was incredibly stingy. Barely bite size. I measured the pieces when we got home: 1"inch wide, by 1.25 high. I felt ripped off. Won't be going back.

One of the best restaurants in Foster City. However, when compared to all the sushi restaurants in the Bay Area, it's not notable. Don't get me wrong, the food is satisfying. The salmon and sashimi are very fresh. The miso soup with stringy mushroom was the bomb indeed. The peanut salad dressing is a bit chalky for my taste. The lunch bento box is a good value, dinner can be quite pricey. And beware, Sunday closed.

I work in Foster City, so I'm kind of a regular at Kobe, eating there on average once a week for the last six years. The food is pretty good. It's always been fresh, but the sushi rice isn't always perfect, although it was today. While I generally like Kobe for their food and ambiance, I do have a couple warnings. -Another reviewer said the place is quiet, but seated at the bar for lunch today I had to yell at my dining companion in order to be heard. It was very loud in there today. Much of that was because there were a lot of people there. I typically go here later in the afternoon, although you have to be careful because they close between lunch and dinner. Still, the lunch rush has usually just left by the time I get there, so I'm used to it being quieter. -I was there at 12:15 today on my work lunch, and we both ordered the Kobe lunch bento, which is a pretty good value. We were served the miso soup and beverages, but an hour later our bento boxes were nowhere to be seen. I changed our order to take-out, as we had to be back at work. I've *never* had service take this long there, although they were definitely slammed today at the lunch rush, and they have a few staff members who joined in the last few months. The woman I'm used to seeing running the place during the day was not there today. It was particularly embarrassing today as I was wanting to show the place off to my coworker. In the future I may not go here at exactly the Noon lunch hour, as I can't wait an hour for a box lunch. -I don't know if today was just an off-day for them or what, but my chicken teriyaki had an excessive amount of inedible connective tissue in it today. Overall today was not a good experience trying to show the place off, and I'm left not sure what to think of a place that has been a pretty rock-solid performer for me for the last six years.

I've been to Kobe a couple times for lunch time and have never had a complain. They have reasonable prices and great customer service. I usually get the teriyaki bento box. Pretty good amount of food for the price you pay. One of my favorite japenese restaurants around.

Review is for TO GO only I order to go here since I live around the corner. I typically order the bento boxes for lunch. Though competitively priced (around $10), the bento boxes are HUGE, I save the rest for dinner. I ordered the beef short ribs, assorted tempura, california roll, comes with salad, soup and rice. The service was cool, my food was ready to be picked up by the time I got there. Bonus: The patio is dog friendly according to the waitress that works there. Definitely a plus!

  • S T.

Good lunch bento boxes. Short ribs and salmon are always good, sashimi is also good though sliced thin. I've also had their sushi rolls and nigiri and enjoyed them. The fish always tasted fresh. It does get packed at lunch time, bad timing could make it a long lunch for you. Service is always polite, though in the lunch rush not always as attentive as you may wish.

I am pleased to say that I finally found a very good sushi place not far from home :D There's always this feeling that many of the sushi places are no more than a fast food restaurants with low grade materials and quick service but Kobe is not the case. It's has been my third time in here, one time (lunch) by myself and twice (dinner) with friends. By myself I ordered the bento box that was very reach and tasty and for the reasonable price it was a very satisfying choice. Total on both dinners we had about 10 different rolls, miso soup, a few side side dishes and the reason why I'm not writing which ones is because they were all tasty, fresh and as expected from a good sushi place. Bon Appetite!

Top notch service and stylish and quiet setting as noted by others. Our server was very gracious, attentive without being intrusive and flexible with a few twists we thew her way. The one item I have had so far that is over the top to die for is the Hamachi Poppers. They are presented beautifully and the texture and taste are something to behold.

Thank you, dear co-workers, for introducing me to a Japanese restaurant in Foster City other than Tokies! (No offense, Tokies...) Kobe is now my sushi place of choice in Foster City, simply for the fact that it is much more reasonable than Tokies (hey, if you go out to lunch a lot, little price differences start to matter!). The service here is super friendly and they are always very attentive, which is crucial when you are on a work break. Both times I went there I got the chicken teriyaki bento box with California rolls and gyoza, and I have not been disappointed. Look forward to going back here again; it's now one of my favorite weekday lunch spots in FC!

I ordered Uni nigiri, Salmon nigiri, scallop nigiri, hamachi nigiri and a salmon blossom roll. The nigiris are extremely small, compared to other places like Hotaru or Sushi sam. Uni is NOT fresh and sweet. I dont know which part of the Hamachi I got, but doesnt taste fatty and fresh. The roll is even worst. Too much sauce, ruin the salmon. It only taste like mayo mix with rice. The price is relateively expensive since their sushi is so tiny. I might go back again to try their cooked food instead of sushi.

It sad to see restaurants continuing to fail at this local Edgewater strip mall but I think Kobe will survive. I came here for dinner once with my family. I really enjoy the trendiness; it almost seems too cool for the location. Service is personable and they make you feel comfortable. For a neighborhood Japanese restaurant, Kobe is definitely a convenient option but you're not going to get anything out of the ordinary here. Typical items include bento boxes and sushi rolls; most items are for above average prices.

We were craving Japanese food in the San Mateo/ Foster City area and came across this little gem. Once you walk into the restaurant, you are greeted by a small little bar at the front door that has seating for two and a small dining room with a big sushi preparation area prominently located. The walls are covered with Japanese origami paper. It's got a pretty cool quaint Japanese style motif. Now on to the food. We decided that we just wanted sushi... some really good sushi. We ordered the Escolar, toro, smoked tuna, tai, and toro. Chomping on the sashimi that I just mentioned, I have to tell you that the fish was fresh and of high quality. Toro.... wow, wow, wow. The last time I had good Toro, I was in Chiba, Japan awhile ago. Their toro just melted in my mouth. I wanted some more, but... it was market price which means, $$$$. It was worth every penny. We also ordered a dragon roll and the bay roll which consisted of a standard California roll with cooked scallops on top. Dragon roll was pretty standard and tasted great. I have never had a bay roll and it was definitely a welcome change of pace from other rolls that I have ordered in the past. Of course, we all know that a couple pieces of nigiri sushi and a couple of hand rolls does not satisfy a healthy appetite. We also ordered a bowl of soba noodles with tempura to share. I can see this place being busy during dinner but we came by early on a Friday afternoon. I will definitely come back for a return visit.

Underwhelming. Mushy maguro, overly fishy hamachi, and a mildly dirty appearance to the whole place. I'm mystified by the good ratings others have given.... Extra star for free tea and soup, as well as polite, attentive staff.

My husband I wanted to find a Japanese restaurant close by and we found Kobe. Below is my review that I tried to outline to make it easier to read. We ordered the: -Foster City Roll: which had too much cream cheese and din't have much flavor. -Delirious Roll: was pretty good. -Tako Salad: octopus and cucumber salad presentation was nice, but wished we had more octopus. -Black Snapper sashimi: was delicious. The server recommended this and we decided to try this because this is season. It was a bit pricey though; $10 for a few pieces but the texture was firm and "bouncy" in your mouth. -Miso Soup: was a bit salty like most restaurants. -Lycheetini: can use more booze -Sapparo: Average price The service was pretty good, but wished that the waitress had actual recommendations instead of saying everything is good. Like other reviews, we were turned off by the loud conversations by other patrons. We didn't seem to have too much privacy. Like: The hours Friendliness of staff Easily Accessible (Parking etc) Ok: Drinks Flavor Dislike: A bit pricey Delay in receiving food Overall: It was okay. Still looking for the perfect Japanese restaurant around our neighborhood.

a good lunch hot spot. bento boxes range from $8.95 to $9.95 depending on what you choose. most come with basic california roll, salad, and soup. choose from beef / salmon teriyaki and even short ribs. tempura, sashimi, sushi, and gyoza are also part of the choices. the food is tasty and fresh. i especially like their tempura because everything is cooked before the deep frying. kobe definitely satisfies a japanese bento box craving.

What else could one do but be super analytical about everything in a restaurant when eating by themselves? I came here craving Udon like none other (on a hot summer day...yes im aware). Usually ill head downtown san mateo for anything japanese but today Kobe had to suffice. This seems to be a hang out for the locals. Every person that walked in the door was surprised to see the next door neighbor Bob sitting down drinking his Sapparo...but whatever thats irrelavant were here to talk food right? Right. Okay. Hmm. Udon. It wasnt bad but the damn bell peppers really threw me off. The chicken tasted like it had some Chevys tex mex rub on it and I could have done without the tofu. The Ika on the other hand was great. Not too creamy and the cucumber inside added a fresh taste to it. The place isnt bad but i cant say im convinced of the Yelp sticker on the front door just yet. Round 2?

Nice place to eat in. Right by the water, outdoor seating for a nice day, but the indoor decor (we were seated at the bar) is super cool too. We ordered the lunch specials, which started with miso soup. I got the salmon teriyaki with a California roll and some sashimi, and a side salad. The miso soup was surprisingly good -- normally I don't like them because they're way too salty for my taste, but this one wasn't. Portions were small, but the salmon was great and I really enjoyed the rest of the fish I ate. Service was quite slow so definitely not an option for a quick lunch and I'm not sure I'll have the time to go back, but I recommend it.

I ordered take out from here earlier this week as there aren't many Japanese places in FC and Tokie's is closed on Mondays. I ordered the pink dragon and teka maki. The pink dragon was actually decent, I liked the sauce that they used but the rice was a bit too soft and was falling apart while I was trying to eat it. The teka maki was okay, I think the tuna sashimi tasted okay, not as fresh as other places but decent. Overall this place is decent but their rolls are bit pricey especially since they were just okay.

Knew the owner from a random meeting 2 years ago. Took me till now to check out her place. I lived in Japan and am half Japanese, and this place is good, very good. Tempura is crispy and hot. Sushi is creative & tasty. Side dishes we've had are all good flavor, good portion and good quality. Atmosphere is nice for a date, but I went with my young kids and it was fine. Price for Japanese, is as expected. I find for what we got, very reasonable! Nice decor and nice service. Would highly recommend.

I did a surprise party here for my friend last month and it went ok for the most part. I really appreciate the management for accommodating our party of 14. There was a small miscommunication at first about the seating arrangement, but it got fixed. The food is awesome! Its very delicious, but very small. (Well at least for my friends and I its very small because were big people lol). it is very pricy for the portion they give you. Their service is ok. 2 stars for the great food! and 2 star for their great service.

This is right around the corner from our house, but we'd never noticed it till last night. Usually when we want sushi and don't want to go far, we go to Tokie's, but I am sick of the bad service there, so we decided to find something else. We have two preschool-aged boys. I hated going to Tokie's and seeing their look of dismay when they see the kids, and then getting hostile service. So it was important to find something kid friendly. According to Yelp, Kobe is kid friendly. When we first walked in, I felt a bit apprehensive as it looks like a "nice" place. But they were super friendly as soon as we walked in, and immediately served four cups of water, and two of them were cute little kiddie cups. Their friendly service earned them 1 star. Since no amount of cajoling will get the boys to eat sushi, we usually ask sushi places if they can make rice balls - basically nigiri without the fish. The boys love it - they dip the rice balls in soy sauce and inhale them. Tokie's will do it with a bit of begging (which is why we used to brave the hostility and go there), but many sushi places just flat out won't do it, even though we're paying for it. When we asked at Kobe whether they could just make rice balls, the waiter looked unsure, but after asking the sushi chef, he came back and said, "Sure!" That alone earned them 2 stars. My husband and I each ordered the 8-piece sashimi plate, and he ordered a spicy tuna hand roll while I ordered the salmon skin hand roll. Everything was awesome. The sashimi melted like butter in my mouth - it was delicious and fresh. My salmon skin hand roll was yummy too. And the boys loved their rice balls. Overall we were very happy. I would definitely come back.

Just the best Sushi place in the area. Absolutely great food and the best welcoming crew. Jackie and Lisa are very courteous, pleasant and professional. The cooks are also very easy going and easy to talk to. The food, oh man the food is great. The restaurant is always full of customer and they deserve it. Go there and have fun.

Phoned in my order for lunch because I am all about convenience...I ordered a lunch bento box with beef teriyaki and tempura. It also came with salad, 4 pc california rolls and miso soup...all for like $10. As I was eating my lunch, I had Yelp in mind. I was thinking...okay what will I find to complain about, but nope! Everything was delish! The beef teriyaki was very tender and the sauce was perfect...not too sweet, not too thick or salty...it was just good! Tempura was cooked perfectly crispy and not greasy...and I was just pleasantly surprised with all the food. The restaurant is a bit small, but the space is used in a very efficient way. And the size does not take away from the style. The wall behind the sushi bar is a large mural of Japanese characters. The place has a traditional yet modern feel to it. I will definitely eat here again!

Dear Yelp Journal, I am such a good person that I completely eat more light to be considerate of the diet needs of the person I am eating with. I don't need to lose the weight, but hey, if someone is dieting and wants to sustain him/herself on sushi then who I am to oppose? Anyhoo, I spotted this place out of the corner of my eye one night when I was going to Lucky's to return a video (you know those $1 red box rentals, journal?). I came here right after returning the video and there were no tables left. Fortunately, after a minute of waiting, two people got up and left a table that I plus one got to have. It was super busy that night and they were taking kinda long to get our food to us. They gave us complimentary chicken skewers as an apology. There is a female manager there that handles any drama and knows her clientele really well. She knows people by name and there always seems to be a party in the back corner. The customer service is all right, which is one reason preventing me from saying they're a perfect restaurant. They also forget parts of your order. The other thing is that their cocktails were not that good. I got spoiled at Blowfish with their sake cocktail, but I definitely didn't have bartender drama here that I had at Blowfish (bad memories). The sashimi here is super fresh. I love the melt in your mouth halibut and none of their sashimi has the fishy, rubbery smell that some restaurants seem to serve to you without hesitation. I really do approve their sashimi and that's why I've returned so many times, oh, and because I am such a considerate person to those with diet restrictions. Hahaha, I kill me, journal. Prices are a little bit above average and I have to say that the tempura is really expensive. I got to two pieces of shrimp for like 10 bucks or something. No good at all. Anyway, I'd say plop down with a couple orders of large hot sakes and just gorge yourself on sashimi and sushi. I'll probably be back a few more times.

This was my first time here. I went primarily based on recommendations from other Yelpers, and they didn't let me down. I was with a party of 3 and got there almost right at noon. Very soon after, the place quickly filled up, primarily on account of a limited number of tables. The restaurant has a good variety of options, including good options for those who may not want sushi but were forced to go with a group. The service was quick and the food was good. I would definitely come back if I'm in the area again.

This place is decently good. I definitely wouldn't say its my favorite Japanese place ever or even close to the best quality. But, I really appreciate their generous lunch portions for their bento box, especially the spicy pork...VERY YUMMY. It's an excellent deal for just $8.95. A few other pros... - good service - veryyy easy parking (in a huge plaza) - beautiful view of the FC levy A quick tip would be to COME EARLY during lunchtime. A lot of people who work nearby come for lunch, because it's convenient and cheap. So make sure to get in before the lunch hour rush!

Yum! New favorite sushi spot. Had a delicious dinner here on December 23rd. We walked in and the place was full and busy, so we waited a few minutes for a table. Service was very slow which is my only gripe- my husband was more bothered than I, I was happy to sit and relax for a while. The room is nicely decorated with Christmas lights which look beautiful, they should keep them up year-round. We received our own (very pretty) pot of green tea, and the miso soup and edamame were quite up to par. He ordered two special rolls, one of which I sampled and we both agreed was very good. My spicy sashimi chirashi was fantastic and really hit the spot. Excellent cuts of fish and the spicy sauce on the side was amazing. The dish comes with a bed of rice beneath salad greens and topped by five different kinds of fish and tobiko. I love the salad concept but a little less lettuce would have been good. It was a little overwhelming. Be that as it may, I thoroughly enjoyed the dish and would return for that specific item again.

Something must have happened in the last month since I came here, because the food and the service went downhill. My Mom and I go here regularly for lunch, because it is close to home and is one of only 2 Japanese restaurants in Foster City. We have never had problems in the past, and we have been returning customers, but will likely not return. First of all, it took an extremely long time to get our food--more than 20 minutes, and the restaurant wasn't all that busy. In the past, the lunch specials have come out within 10 minutes of the order being placed. The miso soup that came with the bento box was not only extremely salty, but the bits of tofu in it were less than 2 mm in width and looked like they had been smashed through a collander and placed in the soup. Now for my udon. I should have known something was wrong when I saw the tomato floating in the soup, not to mention the slices of green peppers (never used in authentic udon!) and giant button mushrooms. When I tasted the soup, it had no flavor; it tasted stale. I called the lady over, and told her that the broth tasted funny. She told me it was a "vegetable broth." WTF--udon soup is supposed to have shirodashi as the base, and even if it doesn't there should be a slightly salty/shoyu taste to it. The lady took it back and offered to make a new broth--15 minutes later, it came back out. This one had a little more flavor to it, but still had some odd things in it, like shredded pieces of nappa cabbage, plus the giant button mushrooms and more green peppers. Whoever prepared this evidently had no idea of what should and should not go into noodle broth; If mushrooms appear at all, they should be shitake mushrooms, not white button mushrooms. The odd taste was still present, and I realized it was the taste of the nappa cabbage and the green peppers--they had been boiled with the soup. The tempura coating was way too thick--it is supposed to be lightly breaded, but this was coated in the flour and rather oily. My Mom's salmon teriyaki wasn't much better--it was a thin slab of salmon slathered in teriyaki sauce. When the order was placed, she asked specifically to have the sauce on the side. It was supposed to come with 4 California rolls as well--they were missing, and we had to ask for them. How can a place go from being decent to being below average in only a month? We wondered if maybe the regular cook was on summer vacation, but either way, we don't plan on coming back here any time soon.

Staff: Super friendly! Once you walk in, you don't feel like you're entering a foreign country. The music they place is soft top hits: One Republic... Although the place is on the smaller side, they accommodate to everyone's needs. There was a time when I would order from here more often than eating at home. I was a familiar face and voice. The vast variety of sushi rolls are great. Kobe fulfills all your mixed sushi cravings into about twenty or so specialty rolls. All of which are written on the side wall :) I do not have a particular story to share about a miraculous time in my life that took place at Kobe, but I always enjoy(ed) a quiet sushi dinner with my mom.

Came here for dinner while staying at a relative's house in San Mateo. Ordered the roll with seared shrimp and hamachi (I think it's the delirious roll?) and a bento box to share. The roll was the highlight of the evening. Each ingredient was super fresh, and I love the textural contrast between the cooked shrimp and the raw fish, even though normally I'm not big on raw stuff. The bento box was good, too, though it was much more run-of-the-mill. The beef and chicken came on one single sizzling platter, which I really liked, but the beef marinade was a bit too sweet for my taste. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is small but well-kept. Overall a great place to go for a casual night out.

I needed to find a good sushi restaurant for dinner inbetween SFO and Palo Alto, and I found this place thanks to you Yelpers. It was definitely a hit, and the food was delicious. But a few tips to be aware of, that I don't think have been posted, or at least I must have missed so I am reiterating. -This is in a strip mall. If you hate strip malls, there's your warning. It's right next to Lucky's, and it doesn't have a sign that reads "Kobe." It has a red awning that says "Japanese Bar & Grill." There's tons of parking, which is the upside to a strip mall. -It's SUPER small. Teeny tiny. So it gets loud and crowded. MAKE A RESERVATION. -Not great for a huge group of folks. I saw a group of 6 and they looked like they were ready to burst out of their table. -The chairs are kind of small and a little uncomfortable, but the good food makes up for it. -Service is very slow. Don't come here if you're in a hurry. -The sake ROCKS. -They have a lot of food options but we loved all of the sushi rolls and sashimi. Whoever said the sashimi cuts are big wasn't kidding. It didn't bother us, though. Their japaleno tuna roll is so yummy, and their 49er roll was one of my faves. -Their version of the miso soup is a little odd - it had some vegetable bits in there that I've never seen in a miso soup before. That being said, I still devoured it. -Pretty pricey so it's not a cheap place but it's worth the $$ -Walk behind the restaurant and get a gander at the purdy purdy water.

Very small restaurant with very chic decor. The sushi is solid but not great. I was really disappointed by the "Seafood Grill". It wasn't a grill. It was a soup with some boiled seafood. The food just isn't memorable. I'm giving Kobe 3 stars because the service was very good but I won't be returning just for the service.

Kobe is one of my favorite places to go when I want sushi. I've been going here for the last four years and love the food. It's a little hidden place, in a Lucky's shopping center. The restaurant is small, but somehow manages to have room for lots of people. Jackie (the owner) is always so welcoming, with a smile on her face. On Friday nights, you may need to wait for a few minutes to get a table. Sometimes I'll grab a seat at the bar and order food. There are tables inside, outside or chairs you can grab and eat near the chefs. If you have a big group (more than four), I suggest calling ahead so they have tables ready for your party. You can't go wrong with ordering appetizers. The gyoza, stuffed mushrooms, and spicy stuffed jalapenos are so delicious. I love the fire spicy tuna roll. It's lightly fried and has some special sauces sprinkled on top. Yum! I would get that every time and recently have ventured out to other rolls including the pink dragon, caterpillar roll and Foster City roll. I'm not too adventurous with fresh fish, but my hubby loves their sashimi. I've seen some sizzling skillet dishes that look and smell tasty. There are several cold sakes to choose from, along with wine and other cocktails. I usually order a small hot sake and drink it all to myself.

Kobe is not the place to go for authentic Japanese food. My family seemed satisfied with the quality of the fish for their sashimi and nigiri, but the dishes from their kitchen were just way off. Their chicken teriyaki was dry and extremely salty. Their yaki udon tasted nothing like yaki udon. The flavors were more Chinese. And bell pepper in udon?!!

We've been coming here for 3 years almost once a week. 9 out of 10 times the sushi is excellent, fresh, the wait staff friendly, the service prompt. Even the 1 out of 10 times that are not tip top its the fish doesn't seem as fresh. After trying many sushi places in the area, this is the best. We try a new roll every week but we especially like the rainbow roll.

I have been here a few more times and it is always awesome! They know me by my face (and uniform) and welcome me with a big hello and a wave goodbye each time I come in. The food is always excellent and the selection of music playing in the background is top notch. This is my official Japanese restaurant now; my "go-to" gal if you will.

I really like this place. The resturant is small and cozy located right near the water. The service is fast and friendly and their sushi is always fresh. Their miso soup is vegetarian friendly. I love their Sans fire roll and their double spicy tuna roll.

I can only say 5 star for it being a great place for lunch or dinner. The rolls are not huge and tasty. Sofian the waiter is just spot on keeping things rolling....

good food. great price. excellent service. what more can a food lover ask for? the rolls were somewhat small compared to other japanese restaurants, but boy, they fill you up! lots of sections to choose from and the sashimi was really fresh. their lychee sake/tini-whatever is SOO good too. not too strong and the alcohol doesn't over power the lychee flavor (which i love!) but at the same time, after drinking one or two of these babies, you can get all warm and fuzzy inside. the service is PHENOMENAL. we had a big group, our waitress took the time to do each credit card transaction by what we ordered and even cut up our birthday cake for us after all the candles were blown out. she had a smile on her face all the time even though she was getting pulled in many directions. big ole' tip for her!

This is a pretty decent place to get a bento box and some moche for sure! It is a little small, but they play hip hop and pop inside which is kind of cool and the place is very clean looking and modern. I like it! GET THE SPICY TUNA FILLED JALAPENOS!!!

  • Jaron S.

The food is really good, but the portions are really small for the price. Luckily I wasn't extremely hungry when I went. The miso is excellent and was the first time I had it with enoki mushroom, which was a welcome addition. Fish tasted fresh and was very tasty. Just with the portions were bigger!

just got home from kobe's fifth year celebration.... it was great.... the place was totally packed... everyone seemed like they were having a good time... the special was penny sake shots.... i didn't have any pennies, but took serious shots.... the food was good and the place was lively.... right on~~~~

Totally failed. Ordered a ramen soup (only ramen on the menu and it happened to be spicy--I don't eat spicy) so I asked if if was possible to have non-spicy. After the waitress checked with the cook, I was good to go. Well when my ramen soup came, waitress was perplexed and didn't know which one was the non-spicy one as both soups looked the same. Another trip to kitchen to double check again. Then she came back and told me that the shredded bamboo may be spicy well NOT. It was the "red" oil that was probably added by mistake. OK, not as red as the other soup I thought and proceeded by taking some of the oil to make sure I can eat it. Well, it was still way too spicy. So I didn't eat it and didn't want to order something else as it took so long for the food to come in the first place. My friends will be done with their food by the time mine will get there. So I shared my friend's meal and it was bad. She didn't like it either. Also, they use MSG. I know so because I always get really thirsty when I eat MSG food. And I also got a bad headache. I didn't have to pay for my ramen which is a good thing. There you go. I was there last week. I will not be back.

The sushi was good, but its the decor, service, and location that really earned the four star rating. My husband and I stopped by for dinner at 8pm after reading the reviews on yelp. We ordered the pink dragon, the cherry blossom, a dragon roll, and the very spicy tuna roll (highly recommended!!). We also shared a large, and very tasty, hot sake, and two bowls of miso soup. Along with a stroll on the dock, it made for a very enjoyable and romantic date night. I'm so glad we have a decent sushi place so close to home :)

I have been coming to Kobe for several years now and Kobe never fails to satisfy + delight. I've had consistently good food + service each time I go. This is one of my favorite spots for lunch and dinner. I've recently discovered their bento box lunches, which are a great price (around $10) for the amount of food you get. Also, they've recently updated their sushi menu and have added some new rolls. My boyfriend is a vegetarian and we were happy to see that Kobe's added a bunch of vegetarian-friendly rolls. So, thanks Kobe. I truly do love this gem of Foster City!

Just got back from another amazing lunch at Kobe. this place has the best music I've ever heard at a sushi resteraunt! Seriously, I've never heard club music played so softly and still work so well. The food here is great. I get the bento boxes a lot (don't sneer at me you snobby sushi lovers...) and the spicy pork/spare ribs are full of flavor and the tempura is always tasty. My co-worker always gets the udon noodle soup and raves as hard as I do. Plus the service is awesome! and the servers are gorgeous... Jackie had enough sass to fit in at the deli next door. Ha I always love a server with enough wit to cut you. All in all a great sushi place, and probably a great place for an early evening date.

  • Rae N.

Overall, it's a decent sushi place with good service and I enjoyed coming here. That is, until a few nights ago. I took a bite of my tempura ice cream and ended up spitting out a jagged piece of plastic. Not some flimsy piece of plastic wrap, a shard of plastic that could've done some damage had it been swallowed and left me wondering what kind of care (or lack there of) goes into their food preparation.

As you can tell from my other reviews...my husband and I prefer to support neighborhood business and try to stay away from chain restaurants. This is a good example of good local business. Staff is very nice...fish is fresh and menu is innovative. We like to call this place one of our neighborhood finds. We typically spend about $50 per visit with 1 large Sapporo and a few dishes. Good maki menu...has a decent size sushi bar. Decor is nice, hard wood and pretty contemporary. They do have specials, but sometimes run out by the end of the night. My husband is a chef, so sometimes we get there for the last round before they close. Thanks, Kobe for beeing a great go-to spot for us.

My co-workers and I frequent Kobe for the lunch specials. I always go for the Kobe Bento Box - teriyaki chicken, california roll, tempora, salad, and miso... 8.95... what a deal, right? Fills me to the brim every time! I'm not sure if she still works there, but a mysterious waitress with green eyes use to enchant our experience every time. What a looker! The last few times we have not seen her. :-( She was not very friendly, and one time my co worker awkwardly complemented her on her eyes... didn't over too well. One time we got a roll and it was pretty good. You got to check it out if you work in the area.

I haven't tried the sushi rolls here but I would if I was willing to spend a little more money on rolls. I usually eat my sushi in the south bay/milpitas because it is a little cheaper. BUT this place...oh man... the lunch specials on bento boxes are very reasonably priced and you will be filled up!! I've tried the Chicken terriyaki, katsu, and the korean ribs and they were all very yummy. If I worked in Foster City I would probably go here once a week.

Love - Love - Love this place. If you're looking for a fun and welcoming neighborhood sushi restaurant... this place feels like a Japanese Cheers! "where everyone knows your name......" My husband and I discovered Kobe's about a year ago and fell in love with it immediately. We frequently meet our friends at Kobe's for our traditional "get together". It's always a good time. Everyone that works here, including the waitress, the owners and the sushi chef, treat us like family. They greet us by our name every time we arrive and again when we leave. Week after week we walk away extremely happy with the food, the service and the amazing hospitality. I should add... the music is fantastic - it makes for a fun environment. I prefer their dinner service more than lunch. The Lunch service is a little more rushed (as it should be so you can get back to the office) I recommend you check them out for dinner. You won't be disappointed. I can't say enough great things about Kobe Sushi. The portions of food are large and delicious , the environment is cozy, well designed and very clean. The service is very friendly & polite. They have a good selection of beer, sake and sodju and the prices are reasonable. (love the sake-tini's) Kobe's is full of regular's - that says wonders.

Awesome lunch place! Especially for those of us who work in the area, because there's not a lot to choose from. The lunch bento boxes are very filling, comes with the norm... Salad, miso, 4 california rolls and choose of two other things such as tempura (highly recommend), teriyaki, and they even have a Korean-style spicy pork on the menu to choose from. The staff are fast, you will get in and out with plenty of time left in the lunch hour.

Edit:: Their stuff is still great and service is still awesome, but we went again after a while not going and were told that the MISO SOUP IS NOT VEGETARIAN now safe as it has bonito fish flakes in it. There was some confusion about whether they'd had a miscommunication with the chef or he'd changed the recipe, but they were very careful to make sure we didn't order it since the change, so I'm still happy with how vegetarian friendly they are even if I don't get miso soup there anymore. * We've discovered a new favorite. They have a stuffed (then battered and fried) shitake mushroom appetizer. If you ask, they'll stuff them with tofu instead of shrimp and they are AMAZING! * Tried the cripsy tofu roll and it was ok, but kind of bland. Original review: All the staff was very welcoming, friendly, and helpful (including going back to the kitchen to ask the chef about ingredients for us, then bringing back their written out list so we'd know what we were eating). While waiting for our table, we got to observe several tables who were obviously familiar and on very friendly terms with the waitresses. The food was all delicious! We're vegetarian, so no idea about the fish. They didn't have decaf tea (not surprising since not many people do), but our waitress offered to mix a pot of half tea, half water for me so that I could enjoy the flavor without having quite as much caffeine since I'm supposed to be avoiding it. We had: * wakame salad, which had just enough flavor in the dressing to be delicious, but not to drown out the wakame. I'll admit it was tasty enough I couldn't help ordering a second one mid meal. *Miso soup with enoki mushrooms in it - yum! * Vegetable gyoza which were completely vegetarian, but because of their soy faux meat filling and meaty flavor, both my husband and I were unsure of their actual vegetarian-ness, but they brought out an ingredients list and everything and it seemed pretty legitimate, just tasty. * asparagus roll, basic and simple. Not bad, but I probably wouldn't order it again, especially when they have some more intriguing rolls that also include asparagus. * Cucumber roll, basic and refreshing * Oshinko roll, also basic and tasty * Shitake roll, simple, but very yummy * Vegetarian roll,m which had shitake, avocado, cucumber, lettuce, and oshinko. It was quite delicious * vegan roll, which had asparagus, cucumber, and fuji apple and was topped with a little more of the tasty sesame wakame salad. I liked it quite a bit, but my asparagus hating husband refused to try it. * a chef's special roll called a vegan pruple thumb roll. It had asparagus inside, rice on the outside, and was topped with a slab of eggplant and a piece of avocado. The flavors went together really well and the texture was wonderful. Probably my second favorite of the rolls we got. * Futo maki with tomago, shitake, inari, acocado, oshinko, and cucumber. It was heavenly and probably my favorite. The only thing about it that I didn't like was that my mouth is very narrow and the roll was a bit wide with all the tastiness crammed in it, but I'm used to that, so it wasn't a big deal. It wasn't cheap, but there weren't any prices that were unreasonable, so I'm thinking it's just that we got so much (and my tummy was overstuffed and painful because it was tasty enough to keep me eating beyond being full, so I know we ordered way too much)we'll definitely be going back!

This restuarant never fails me. The chef is good here. Food: The food is extremely good here and is very savory. I just couldn't believe it. My gosh, I can still remember the taste. I ordered the "Fuji Apple Sushi" and "Lion King roll (baked)"...oh my gosh, it was to die for! It is really friggin good. I'm craving for the Fuji Apple Sushi roll. I drove 30 miles to have dinner here and it never fails me. It is so worth it. Price: Great price for this economy. Definitely thumbs up to recommend to family friends. Parking: Never had a problem, it is shared with anchor store LUCKY's.

This place has the best bento box lunch special ever. For $8.99 you get chicken teriyaki, vegetable tempura, California roll, salad, miso soup, and rice. You can substitute for items like ton katsu, sashimi, or spicy pork. The sushi here isn't anything too special so I'd stick to the bento box. The decor and service here is really nice too.

This was definitely my favorite place to have lunch when I worked in the area. It's usually extremely packed right around 12, but if you go in a little bit earlier, the service is exceptional. If not, the service is a little slow, but the help is still great. I always went with the lunch special because it was great for the price, but I mixed it up with the rolls from time to time. The sushi does get a little price-y and there are other japanese restaurants I would rather go to for good sushi, but in the area and for lunch, its perfect for the job. The lunch boxes are filling. The sushi rolls are great. THey also seemed totally cool with us Sake-Bombing for my friend's birthday! This place makes me miss working down in that area.

YUM! This place is a wonderful alternative to my normal routine of the foster city Chevys. The rolls are very flavorful and for such a small place they have great seating. One warning - if it's warm out avoid sitting near a window because they don't have any fans and you will roast!

Not so good. I got the bento box and the food doesn't have much flavor. Their tonkatsu wasn't crunchy. Their tempura is good with light batter, but their dipping sauce was bland. Even though we live close, probably not going to visit again. Also, their bathroom is far away and you have to have a key to use. For a WC frequenter this is not a plus.

Delicious sushi, excellent variety and many rolls with jalapeno and avocado which we love! Service is kinda slow but they work hard, so maybe they are just short staffed. Very friendly environment, customers seem to know each other and waiters know everyone. This is great sign because it means that locals come often! Ambiance is nice, cozy and nice decor. Their appetizers are so good. We have been ordering 2 appetizers every time we go. Their tuna tartare is my favorite pick!

Some may like the music, I find myself muttering "Oh god-that song from the 90s I hoped I would never hear again". On that note, I usually do carry-out. Goes pretty smoothly, minus the time they left the nigiri sushi out of my lunch box. ;_; I'm in love with their donburis, particularly the Maguro Don and the Unagi Don. The sushi is decent, but I'd much rather hit up Izakaya Mai or Sushi Sams in Downtown San Mateo, or Higuma in Redwood City. If not, their fancy rolls are probably a better choice than your basic sushi. Last complaint, the tempura and gyoza are freqently over-fried and hard. In any case, this is still the best place to go in Foster City, and the servings are pretty big and filling for the price.

Pretty standard japanese fare that was good but not great. we got the seafood yaki udon and the beef hot pot. both came with salad and complimentary miso soup and the main courses, themselves, were also pretty good. prices were decent and service was ok. i definitely wasn't super impressed, but the food was solid.

This was the last place Tiff & I tried before she left me for Texas! LOL!!! Lets just say the portions are amazing! We split the beef teriaky dinner with california rolls and they gave us both soup @ no extra charge. We sat right at the counter and watched the sushi chef do his magic! The place is tiny but their make shift bar was crowded with what seemed to be regulars! I must say I would definatly love to go back!

Kobe is a little restaurant hidden in the Edgewater Place. It looks small from the outside and feels small inside as well. It's amazing how they spaced out the whole place for a restaurant w/ Sushi bar. The food is quite good both in taste and presentation. You can tell the food is prepared with care. Teriyaki combo comes with some of the best teriyaki I had in any Japanese restaurants. Tempura is served in a separate container. It had two pieces of shrimps, one piece of each of sweet potato, eggplant, broccoli, carrot, and onion ring. Sushi special was good. The best pieces there were the white tuna. All the fish were really fresh. Kobe has a huge selection of sushi rolls. The in-restaurant menu only has a subset of what's on the takeout menu. We tried Orange Blossom Roll. It looked really nice and tasted yummy too ... It brought a big smile to Julia's face ^_^ The portion is not very big ... maybe it is because Sushi dinner didn't come with a separate bowl of rice. Price is a bit on the high side, for the 3 items above, tab came out to be $60 plus and we left with only half full stomach.

Thomas created a fabulous omakase for us. From the saki, through the crab, albacore, jalapeño role with some stops of Uni and Hamachi belly - this was an outstanding experience!. Easy to get to, great parking and a nice atmosphere this was a find on yelp. Sofitel did not have this place on their list of recommended restaurants but Yelp came to the rescue. If I lived here - I would be on first names with everyone in the place.

When rating Kobe Japanese Cuisine & Bar I wavered between three and four stars. We didn't have much of the sushi (only a California roll) but opted for a bowl of Udon noodles ($11) and the teriyaki dinner combo ($18.95). Two salads started the meal and I got miso also with the combo. My boyfriend's udon noodles came in a HUGE bowl but he said the broth was a little salty. I thought they were very flavorful. After my soup and salad I got a bowl of rice (waaay more than I could finish) and a sizzling platter of chicken (I got mine plain) with onions, carrots, and a piece of broccoli. The California roll was also part of my combo and was really tasty. We were both stuffed and had more than enough food. On a Friday night the restaurant was about half full though the parking kind of sucked in that strip mall. It wasn't cheap, but wasn't over priced for Foster City, pretty middle of the road. It wasn't bad but we'd probably try other places before we return again.

Love it. Fav local hangout. Food - Excellent. Sushi is always fresh. I hate it when oysters are sold out, but otherwise, I still give it 5 stars. Environment - Family atmosphere. Love the decor. Owners rock. If you're lucky, you can catch a night of karaoke. Price - Superb. Competitive.

Some little things I love: The glasses. I want those glasses for my house. They are gorgeous. The decor. It's not the typical style. I think its modern without being pretentious. It's a fresh designed look. The size. It's not tiny so you can find a seat, but it's not gigantic either. Goldilocks size, just right. The music. OK, I am lame, but I love the 80s/90s throwbacks. It's not very loud, but just loud enough to make you sing along. The waitresses. They are really a pleasure to be around and pay attention to you. The food, of course. I find their sushi rolls delicious and fresh. The craftsmanship is wonderful, they are delicious before it even hits your palette. The mojo. Every time I eat there I am happier than when I arrived.

the seafood udon really hit the spot on a freezing rainy day. the place is small but they do have seats outside and beware, it can get very crowded during lunch! also, because its a small place, you may be elbow to elbow with another table! the udon came out in a cast iron pot and had tons of seafood (shrimp, mussels, baby scallops, calamari), tofu, and cabbage. ($9) they also have a buckwheat noodle option! This place is vegetarian and vegan-friendly, so that's a plus! the decor is hip and suits the place really well. Staff was extremely friendly and service wasn't bad. p.s. they have many choices and combinations of bento boxes ranging from $8-$9! something i will try next time :) and their salad dressing is AMAZING!! flavor til the very last bite.

This place is pretty damn good.... they play kind of cheesey music in here .. old school/92.7 house but at least it makes it a little more fun. The lunch deals here are the shizzy ... I got short ribs, 3 pieces of sashimi, rice, salad, soup, and 4 pieces of California roll all for $8.95! Great deal ... good selection of lunch specials ... I will def be back.....and I will update this review. So far all the fish tasted fresh and good and the short ribs were yummy and there were actually quite a few of them on my plate.

My wife and I tried this restaurant for lunch today. Unlike our previous experience at another Japanese restaurant nearby, this time around we had a great time. I ordered the sashmi/sushi combination. The fish was very fresh and it literally melted in my mouth. Yum...My wife ordered the teriyaki bento box with tempura. The beef was cooked perfectly and the amount of sauce was just right. The tempura were fried in the oil at the right temperature. it was crispy and was not very oily. The only negative, if any, was the fact that the lunch was pretty expensive. Nonetheless, it was a very nice lunch outing. I am looking forward to going out to this restaurant for dinner.

My husband and I ventured out last night, he was craving sushi. We were amazed to find this place. We sat at the sushi bar, and the sushi chef was very nice and chatty and made some recommendations based upon fish my husband prefers. I was amazed at how many non-sushi entrees they had- which is what I prefer. We had the gyoza- amazing! Crispy outer shell and delicious filling. I ordered the beef teriyaki- it was a little fatty, but it's expected with a sirloin. It was delicious and the sauce was well balanced. My husband ordered two rolls: Texas Roll and San Fire Roll. He couldn't pick a favorite. Both were packed with stuff and he said the flavor was amazing. His only critique was that in the Texas Roll (which is flash fried)- the albacore seemed to lose some of its flavor. Overall, we are going to be making many return visits.

I know it sounds pretentious to throw in, but this is the best sushi I've had since I stayed in Japan. The Udon, Soba, and bentos are also right on par with what you would expect from an excellent Japanese restaurant. When I lived down the street I would eat here at least 3 times a week between lunch and dinner, usually more. Not once, ever, have I had anything that was lacking in quality. There were even certain types of sushi I found inedible at various other restaurants which I found I liked here, since it is so fresh. They are a small operation, so if they are very busy and everyone is ordering the same thing it can take a little longer, but it is *always* worth the wait. Price goes up one $ if you want to include sake, but with a beer you should still be under $30.

Probably the best sushi in the peninsula I've tried. Funny enough I didn't even know it existing in the strip mall that I've been going to for years. Had their sushi bento box for lunch and it was some of the freshest fish I've had. They also had hamachi hara (yellow tail belly) as a special that was outta this world. Another classic was the short-rib lunch special. Not normal for a sushi restaurant but this one is run by a Korean lady. I think this is going to be my fav sushi place for some time.

Good but expensive. It's a small place, so reservations are probably a good idea. It's hard to find but it was worth it. I was pretty happy with my chirashi.

This place used to be Ichiban sushi, which was a Taiwanese run Japanese restaurant. While the chef was a very nice guy, the sushi was one star. It seems that one star curse followed over to the next tenant, Kobe. When I think of Kobe (the city in Japan, not the basketball player who got sued by some Rocky Mountain Trash Ho a few years back for rape when it was willing), an immediate association is Kobe beef, followed by earthquakes, then one of the local attractions which is the red tower structure, and Kobe style ramen which supposedly Ryowa in Mountain View and Berkeley represent (but might not come close anymore). The last thing I would associate the city of Kobe with is this restaurant, in fact this place would give that city a bad name. Decor in here is very nice, and that's the first thing you notice when you walk in. Behind the sushi couner on the wall is a black background with various Japanese and Chinese characters in white all over the place. But this was when the yen, buck, or should I say won, stops here. Yes this place is Korean run. Seeing kalbi on the dinner menu was a dead giveaway. Only three people were present in the main room; the sushi maker behind the counter, one waitress, and one general manager. Our waitress looked like a fighting game video game character with short spikey hair (and she had some mean looking tatoos as well). She took our order and messed up on two things; we ordered a saba and salmon shioyaki dinner set. It was supposed to come with miso soup (served first) but we got the fish first. Had we not asked, the miso soup would never have come and had to remind our waitress. Next, I ordered four pairs of nigiri sushi. Hamachi, saba, salmon, and ikura. Not that difficult yes? Well the first three pairs came out, but the ikura never came, and we cancelled that order in the end. There were only 3 to 4 tables of people... there shouldn't be a screwup in the order...but it happened. Salmon and saba shioyaki were $12.50 each dinner set. Decent sized pieces but Hotaru gave more portions of salmon, and were cooked/grilled better. By the way Shio Yaki means salt grilled. I think they kinda sorta got the yaki down, but the shio was lacking. There was salt, but it seemed to be a hack job. Perhaps it was the grilling technique that did not bring enough of the flavor out. Or they didn't bother to use rock/sea salt. The salmon was a bit on the dry side. The saba was ok, not much flavor, but the inside to their credit was oily and juicy. But still a far cry from the real deal. Sushi fish quality was not as good as Hotaru also. Not very exciting hamachi, over marinated and a little dryish saba sushi, and run of the mill salmon sushi (I've had better farmed salmon sushi....). Good thing the ikura was cancelled. Prices were roughly the same or close to that of Hotaru in San Mateo, and I would rather eat there next time (and brave the wait). Foster City is not really a foodie haven. EDIT: Something I ate at this place last night did not agree with me. Mild case of food poisoning! Bad Karma for writing 1 star or did I hit the nail in the head?

You wouldn't expect to find a good Japanese restaurant in a plaza mall in Foster City, however, this place is just that.. "Pretty Good". Depending on when you go, it can get pretty packed. The sushi is fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is inviting to those that like a lively place since they have pop/hip hop playing in the background. I would definitely reccomend this place if you just want some good Japanese without the fuss of going into the city.

The freshness of the sushi and the contemporary decor were a pleasant surprise, given the restaurant's strip-mall location. The fact that the bathroom was shared with the rest of the strip mall and located halfway down the sidewalk was a different kind of surprise, however ;) We were pleased with the freshness of the raw fish, the crispiness of the tempura even at the end of the meal(!), the Saba Shioyaki dinner (grilled mackerel) for $12.50, udon, and flavorful salad dressing -- but not the Seafood Grill appetizer (shrimp, scallops, squid, mussels, mushrooms in garlic butter) for $9. Skip out on that one.

San Mateo has a lot of Japanese Restaurants.. I just ordered take out from Kobe. The experience wasn't as smooth from what I'm used to. There was a mix up with my to-go order, I had to wait an extra 10 minutes on top of the 20 minutes I had waited. The food was pretty good, very fresh and flavorful. I got the Niku Udon and the Age Dashi Don. Both were very hot and had great flavor, the udon broth was really good. Age Dashi, the fried tofu was very light tasting. If you're in the San Mateo area, check out Kobe. Great tasting Japanese food.

I've always enjoyed the food and service at Kobe but I've twice now had possible food poisoning after eating their sushi. It's pretty tasty but not worth a case of the explosives. No stomach problems from other sushi places.

I love this place. Like a lot. I have been coming here for like 3 years now and it seems to just keep getting better and better. Maybe it's the averageness of Redwood City sushi spots. Maybe I got shit for brains. Came in on Valentine's day and no wait!!! Chicken bowl was fantastic, sushi was as well. Saki and beer don't hurt either. I wish I would have just stayed here all nite because my night went downhill fast????

Was an alright place. Service and ambiance was probably the best part about it. Will go back to try other things. Most interesting roll tried tonight was Soy Hamachi Roll which is hamachi, blanched asparagus rolled in soybean paper. Given the ingredients it was a very clean tasting roll. They have some other interesting sounding rolls so will go back again to try some more.

Great decor and tasty food. My chicken teriyaki and veggie tempura were very good. The flavor on the chicken teriyaki and the salad dressing is a little different then the norm. Hubby had sushi and he said it was fresh and tasted good. The gyoza was my favorite. We ordered two of them they were so good.

My family and I come here often, and we find the food really enjoyable, and well presented with cool decorations (such as carved carrots or leaves). The employees are very nice and social. My favorite dishes include the salmon teriyaki, CA roles, and kobe skewers. Food is usually brought quick with little wait (except on busy days). However, serving sizes are quite small, and during lunch times, it gets very crowded, and you have to wait long for a table. Overall, I think the food is presented beautifully, and is very good. I enjoy coming back about once a week. :)

Came to Kobe after remembering my usual Sushi spots in Foster City are closed on Mondays. So we walked in and waited to be seated. Nobody bothered to greet us. No big deal, let's just have a seat at the bar. The bar top was dirty and sticky, but I'll just get someone's attention and wipe it up. Again, no big deal. Sat for about 15min... nobody even bothered to come and give us a menu. Ok... forget about the disgusting bar, let's get the menu first. When the menu finally arrived, we tried numerous times to get someone's attention again to take our order. Nobody ever acknowledged. I had enough. We decided to go elsewhere. As we stood up.. the waiter finally said something to us. Too late. I would totally understand this if the place was busy... but it wasn't. There was one sushi chef, 3-4 waiting staff. and a handful of customers. Definitely won't be back.

We went to Kobe this week and their food was still pretty tasty. The portions seem to have shrunk though, specifically the salmon and CA rolls in the bento box. Also, the gyoza was not good. I don't know what they did to change them, but I didn't finish the gyoza. The service and atmosphere were still good! Overall grade: B-

This place will never be my first pick for (Americanized) Japanese. At lunch time it always takes sooooooo long to get your food and I've never thought it was very good. The service is not bad and there's nothing wrong with the restaurant's atmosphere however it's not enough to keep me coming back.

This place has been home to a string of Japanese restaurants over the years. Not sure if it's the same people reinventing it, or new owners, because some of the staff look the same. Just got a bento with spicy pork and tempura. The bento also includes 4 tiny pieces of California roll, rice, salad and all the usual suspects. I was unpleasantly surprised to receive cold miso soup to start. Usually it's so hot you can't touch it. It had some fresh enokis on top, but the seaweed seemed not completely rehydrated. I liked the vegetable selection in tempura which included Japanese yam, onion ring, zucchini and broccoli, and the batter was crunchy with very little grease. The tempura'ed shrimp, however had a very weird mushy texture. The spicy pork, though kind of greasy, is delicious (and not very authentically Japanese)...maybe Korean? Honestly, it's one of the main reasons I come here. The salad was generous and very fresh. One feature of this strip mall is that none of the little restaurants have their own bathroom. You have to get a key and walk into the middle of the mall to use that one. Food: 27/40 Service: 16/20 Atmosphere/Intangibles: 17/20 Value: 16/20 Overall: 76/100

This place is decent. My bf and I sat in the corner of the small bar where I got a hint of sour stench some older bars have. The service was great. The venue itself is quaint and decorated nicely with large Japanese characters adorning the back wall and dark wood throughout. We had a sashimi plate which was also decent. It wasn't great prompting me to rave about freshness, buttery textures or portions. The miso was like everywhere else. Our bottle of sake lived up to the refreshment it was described to be. Overall, it was an average sushi experience- nothing real special. We may return again but likely if Tokie's is closed like it was this night.

We've been to the Edgewater plaza nearly a dozen times, but only just spotted this place - and I'm so glad we did! The place isn't too large, and has some outdoors seating, but it gets a bit windy (and the flies like to hang out throughout the restaurant, unfortunately). Everything was fresh and delicious, and service was prompt and friendly. CHICKEN KARAAGE. Honestly, some of the better that I've had to date. Not too crispy or heavily battered, extremely juicy, and comes out at a temperature that won't scald your entire mouth. TUNA TARTARE. I would say the ratio is 3:1 avocado to tuna, which is lame, but the dish is still fantastic, and the taro chips are cooked to perfection. Definitely a fan. NIGIRI DELUXE. I have no idea why we ordered 2 of these 24-piece monsters. We usually end omakase at 8-10 pieces, so this was a huge mistake. We ended up taking a full plate of sushi home with us. Regardless of our poor life decisions, this was such good sushi! Everything was extremely fresh, the cuts of fish were generous and thick, and the rice to fish ratio was perfect. I'd definitely return for smaller bites, but a solid place indeed!

Decent neighborhood sushi restaurant. We come here for lunch fairly often and the lunch bento boxes are a pretty good value, though the Sushi Lover is a little pricey. The fish tastes fresh to me and their cooked food is fine too. The decor is a fun modern look - lots of darks, but balanced by the wall papered in a heavily textured Japanese paper. Service is a little slower than some of our other lunch spots, but that's often the nature of sushi. Things I've tried (most often to least): * Sushi Lover Bento Box: 6pc nigiri and 8pc sushi (chef's choice), miso soup and salad, $17. I order this one the most and it typically has a few pieces of salmon, a few tunas and a mix of white fish. * Sushi Bento Box: 4pc nigiri and 6pc sushi, etc, etc, $11.50. * Kobe Bento Box: mix and match a meat choice and a side, then miso soup, salad, and California roll, $9.95. * Teriyaki Bento Box: like the Kobe, but with a teriyaki meat choice instead, $10.95. * Chirashi Sushi Bowl: decent amount of fish, $13.50 (lunch). Comes with miso soup and salad. I've also had various daily specials: monkfish liver, poke salad, etc. Tips: * You can always ask for brown rice. * They share the bathrooms, as do most of the restaurants in this mall.

Why are the rolls so small? I'm not a Hobbit. Decent flavors, same American-type rolls you will find anywhere (Dragons, Rainbows, things with cream cheese [ick]). I probably could have eaten 5+ rolls, they were really small. Lunch selections came with steaming hot miso soup = good. Service was kind of meh, the waitress didn't seem too happy to have her job. I think this place is run by Cantonese people? The design of the restaurant is visually pleasing and there is outdoor seating by the water for nice days. I'll come back but only if someone else picks up the tab.

Ordered the cherry blossom roll, dragon roll, and california roll. Ended up costing $40 dollars which is pretty standard pricing for sushi rolls. As for the how the sushi rolls were...I've definitely had better tasting sushi rolls (with better quality fish), but the fish tasted fresh and they weren't too skimpy on the amount of fish they put in the rolls. I like the atmosphere of this place - it's right next to the waterfront and their walls are full window walls which allows for a lot of natural lighting. Their waiters are very attentive and polite, which means they're easy to flag down and you don't have to wait around for anything.

I ordered a bunch of rolls here with a few friends. I woke up vomiting the next morning, and had to spend the day in the ER with food poisoning. I left a message to speak with the manager the next day, and my call was never returned. I will never go back. Beware.

We probably come here once a week and usually order the bento boxes which are delicious and very filling. To start, our go to roll and definitely the king of rolls here is the Ring of Fire. This is a must have here. Not the best sashimi on the Peninsula, go to Sakae in Burlingame for that but bring a wad of money. Here the price is right and service is usually quick and precise. Right by Lucky, there is plenty of free parking and you can view the canals of Foster City from the tables outside and from some inside as well.

I've been here a couple times with my boyfriend for date night and the sushi has always been delicious! Probably the best in foster city, in my opinion. I've also brought my friend here who is vegan, and she loved the large selection of different vegetarian rolls. They have so many rolls, great selection! I only knocked off one star because tonight the service was terribly slow. We got there right before the dinner rush, but it took a little over 45 min to get our appetizer (chicken karage) and then our 3 rolls shortly after. I am calling this a fluke because it's never like that. I do plan on returning!

Ken K. gave this spot one star...and here I am giving it four. Dash in San Mateo was closed for the night, Kobe was open, and better yet - it was right down the street. I'm hungry and not in the mood to drive or cook. We ordered the same thing both times we came here; maguro, sake (salmon), and hamachi nigiri, along with two others that I can't remember. Plus, at one point, a roll. Pleasantly surprised - again - at the quality of sushi in the Bay Area, I thought was only limited to Dash. Either standards or going up, or mine are going down, or I have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about (if you ask my friends they'd probably say the last one). The meal came with a bowl of miso - which, you know what, you don't really think about until they give it to you without asking. I really, really love miso soup. It's comforting in a very zen way. Sipping it - not with a spoon - reminds me of being at home on a rainy, cold day, wrapped in a blanket and watching my favorite movie. Adding it to your sushi meal just raises the bar that much more in a pleasant experience. Sake was solid, and the service was nice, albeit a bit slow despite not many people in there. Maybe it's best to go at a time when they're not busy, as I don't really want to have to wait for my food when it is, and I'm hungry. I didn't try much else here, so this review is really just for the basic nigiri, miso, and sake. Remembering Kobe is making me crave sushi...which I will not attempt to eat while in Texas. No plz.

Modern, cozy, comfortable. Fast and attentive service. Food is fresh and in larger amounts than other Sushi restaurants in the area at the same price, like Tokie's. 2 full pages of specialty rolls! Our dinner: 2 Large Kirin Beers Wakame Salad - simple fresh seaweed salad Jalapeno Tuna Appetizer - spicy tuna fried in a jalapeno - YUM!! Ring of Fire Roll Lion King Roll Fire Spicy Tuna Roll California Roll Total: ~$67 Now my go-to sushi spot in Foster City. :)

My regular lunch spot with fantastic Japanese fare from tasty appetizers, fresh sushi, and excellent bento boxes. 4.25 stars Food: 4.5, Service: 3, Atmosphere: 4 Cost to worth it rating: 3.5 (great box prices at $8-9) Return worthiness: yes Highlights: - Menu: flip on a scroll-like design with appetizers and salads up front, boxes, then a few pages of rolls. Something for every type of Japanese food lover - Bento boxes: like all of the choices with ability to have 2 entree style items plus sashimi. Chicken teriyaki and tempura are standard and good. - Sushi/sashimi: fresh and good quality - Staff: friendly and welcoming. Sashimi in the bento boxes are typically maguro and salmon and they are fine with doing all of one of those instead of a combo (I'm not a salmon girl(. - Spicy tuna in jalapeno deep fried: insane appetizer and really good - Miso soup: flavorful and comical with mini tofu squares - Atmosphere: tiny vacation-looking restaurant spot by the water. Pleasant, nice decor inside and a few tables surrounding it outside - Noodle variety: udon, ramen, soba, yaki-udon, and sukiyaki are all o the menu Midlights: - Drink menu: looks fantastic but such a teaser presenting it to us during a workday lunch Lowlights: - Service can be very slow as place is crowded - Beef short ribs were a bit tougher than I'd like I come as often as I can--it used to be at least once every few weeks. (Wow, I realized I started this review in 2009 and just finished it today.)

As a vegetarian, its hard to find sushi places that'll offer more than a veggie roll. Though, I'm not complaining. I'm happy with even that but when a restaurant goes above and beyond on their vegetarian offerings, it needs to be bragged about! In addition to the creative couple of vegetarian rolls (more so than just cucumber and avocado), they have a vegan bento box!! I usually like to sub out the California roll that it comes with with one of their creative rolls! So, this box comes with salad, rice, sushi, and an eggplant and tofu side. CAN YOU SAY DELISH?! Its a treat for the eyes AND the mouth! The best part of all this is that they also fill their wine up to the very rim! Ahhh I'm coming soon so watch out Kobe! =)

This place is A-okay. Trying this place out for the second time. The first time, there wasn't anything special that I loved about it. Decided to come back and give it another shot because it was a nice day out and by the water. The server was really nice, but food was a-okay. We ordered cali rolls, spicy scallop hand roll, 2 orders of tamago nigiri, baked foster city, and ring of fire roll. Smaller the other sushi spots I go to. Not as fresh, but I mean it wasn't bad.. just not my fave.

Had the beef teriyaki entrée dinner and the bento box with beef teriyaki and tempura. Even though our dinner was take out, they packed up our miso soup and our entrees so nicely and neatly - nothing spilled. They have nice containers (not just the basic takeaway containers) so the rice and salad and entrees don't get smooshed together. The food was really tasty -- definitely not just teriyaki sauce poured over the beef. The beef was nicely marinated and the rice was perfectly cooked. The tempura was a good variety of shrimp and mixed veg - not greasy at all. Had a Foster City sushi roll and a couple orders of nigiri sushi too. Very good but not over the top special. But I would definitely come again. Easy parking by the Lucky supermarket. Nice to sit by the waterfront while we waited for our order.

Came here last night for dinner. It wasn't bad. I love the location of the restaurant because it is right by the water. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We had fun chatting with our waiter about hand stands and circus fitness. My husband and I ordered the sushi dinner. It was 19.99 per person. That was 6 pieces of nigiri and 8 pieces sashimi. It was served with miso soup and a side house salad. Pretty standard. The fish was very fresh. We also ordered the ika sugata (grilled squid). I love this dish...but unfortunately it is better at Kenta Ramen just a few streets down the way. It wasn't grilled to perfection like I like it but it was decent. The sauces here for the squid was a spicy korean sauce and a tartar sauce. It wasn't awesome. I wouldn't mind coming back to this place, but I wouldn't choose it in comparison with Kenta.

This place continues to decline. The sushi was simply dreadful last time I visited. The sushi chef is sloppy and takes zero pride in his work. And he is by turns taciturn then arrogant. The best thing here is the soup but then again without good sushi why bother? Jackie needs to clamp down on the service side as well. Pacific Catch in San Mateo has my business now.

3 STARS because I got the unagi-don and you really do have to suck to mess up on that one. I think that was the only dish that was fine, but the proportions were pretty small. They served it in a BIG plate with the little unagi don smack in the middle. It looked like those dessert dishes where its a tiny piece of dessert and you're suppose to drizzle some chocolate sauce in a design to fill up the rest of the place to make it look less bare. Boyfriend had the Chicken Katsu - bigger portions but tasted mediocre Saw my friend's sushi rolls and they looked puny also. Alright, but not worth a revisit

This place is okay. Food was good, but not memorable. I like the decor, its a nice traditional Japanese place. Size is Tokyo-esque as well. It was more on the romantic side, and I was a little worried about bringing my hungry 3 year old daughter, but she was fine and I tipped appropriately. Ordered a sizzling Teri chicken, hot soba, oyaku donborri, and a philly roll. The best thing was the soba and big Sapporo on this cold night in FC. Portions were adequate and we left satisfied. But we didn't get the wow factor like when we leave Japan town. Not sure what it is. Service was nice, and they were very busy. My suggestion is the wait staff should learn how to pronounce certain words, especially "nigiri". Hey if they're trying to make this feel like a nice traditional Japanese restaurant (which I think they are), then the words should roll off the tongue nicely. Just saying. Try it out, if you're in the area. Decent eats.

Came in on a Friday at 630pm and was seated after a few minutes (party of 1, at bar). Waitstaff is a bit disorganized. Had to flag down a waiter ager waiting at the bar for 5-7 minutes, and the complimentary muso soup came as an afterthought as the waiters asked if I head been given one yet. Food wise, I ordered a caterpillar ($10) and the spidey roll ($11). The sushi rice was bad. It was gummy and overly moist. It also lacked that tinge of vinegar that gives the rice it's flavor. The size of the rolls ate on the smaller side, with the caterpillar coming in at 9 pieces, but sized just a bit larger than rock n roll sushi pieces that you'd order at the supermarket for takeout. Raw fish portions on my spidey roll were small, so tough to judge the quality. Other notes: restroom is located outside and requires a key to enter. No hostess table at the front. Some outdoor seating facing the water. Sizeable menu. Nice interior that would make it a nice occasion spot. Entrees look like they could be tasty, but I'm probably not going to come back to try them.

Our favorite Japanese place in the bay. First of all, the Miso soup: a little treasure. The best we ever had. Second of all, the Katsu Donburi: huge, tasty and awesome. We always have that and we're never disappointed. The place is cool and easy going. Give it a try.

So, I came here with my hubs during his lunch because he liked the takeout he got here before with some coworkers. I must say though, I was not impressed with my food. Decor - 1 : I loved the decor of the place. Felt modern enough. No sticky tables or outdated decor of any sort. Their menus were nicely put together, too. Service - 1 : Seriously, two waitstaff passed us before one asked us "have you been helped yet?" One then said "I'll be right with you." and then passed us a couple times and another waiter seated us. Gave us our water and then we waited a little while longer (10 minutes or so) for the waiter to come back and take our order while we waited and looked around. This place is small, but has outside seating. There were about 3 tables occupied outside, one person at the bar and three or 4 parties (including us) sitting inside the actual restaurant and three waiters. Anywho... Food - 1: Not the best Japanese food I'd ever had. I ordered the Kobe Bento box, ordered chicken katsu and sashimi. Came with a huge salad (and I give it to them for using Romaine vs. iceberg), 6 pieces of CA roll and rice. You know, standard. Hubby got a bento as well, I forgot which one, but what kinda got me was when my hubs ask to sub an avocado roll for the CA roll. The waiter said "Is it okay? it'll be more because it's not made yet and the chef needs to make it." Oh, wait, what!? So, you have standby, not freshly made CA rolls? So, you're giving your patrons something NOT FRESH?! I don't care if its an hour old or a few minutes, its SEAFOOD. Katsu - omg... It was so oily! Made me glad I didn't order the tempura along with it, but maybe I should've. I digress - it was OILY (have I stressed that enough yet?) I mean, I picked it up, it was still dripping oil and it was sweating oil just looking at it. Usually, when I order katsu, its not that oily. I know, I know, its fried and therefore should be oily. Well, theres a line between I can (healthily) handle this and OMG, I feel my arteries clogging. Sashimi - omg. Was this a joke!? Six pieces (3 salmon, 3 tuna) - they were so flipping thin!!! Like, I looked at it and thought it reminded me of sandwich meat slices. Miso soup - I think I paid $11 for good miso soup. Overall, I don't think I'd come here again.

Kobe is my favorite local restaurant. With fantastic food and atmosphere, Jackie and her staff take great care of their patrons and make it a welcoming place for all. I love both the ahi and salmon tar tar, Orange and Cherry blossom roles, hamachi poppers, Foster City roll, and seafood salad. The menu has something for everyone!!

How is this place rated 4 stars? It just blows my mind..... I went here for lunch today with 4 other co-workers and this place is a combination of bad food and bad service. I will definitely continue to drive to Old Town Sushi or Sushi Koyo. We spent a majority of our lunch trying to flag down ANY server for water and napkins. Don't even bother waiting for them to check in on your table because they won't. We ordered a total of 7 different sushi rolls and we agreed that sushi at Whole Foods would have been a better choice. The rolls are very miniature and just drenched in sauce to mask fish that definitely was not fresh. I am never coming back here again.

The food here is very mediocre...and unfortunately there is no lagoon view at this particular restaurant, where a lot of the restaurants in this same plaza do... For the price of their food you can find much better sushi in either San Mateo or San Francisco. Their miso soup, IMHO, is on the salty side of things. The sushi/sashimi is okay, but not really great. You would never expect the portions to be large for Japanese food, but since the quality is just okay, I guess I would be expecting a little bit more. Overall I probably wouldn't recommend this place unless you have a huge craving for Japanese food and that you don't want to drive far outside of Foster City.

I just recently had this. The sushi wasn't bad the only reason why I'm giving them two stars is because they served me an old roll. It was pretty clear that the roll had been sitting out for a while before they served it to me. Someone probably made a wrong order, or whatever the reason might be they reserved the same plate. The wasabi on the plate looked like it had been sitting on the plate all day. There was some discoloration on the top half of the wasabi. It was hard and really dark. The roll I ordered was a topped with hamachi, which was really chewy and dried along the edges. Enjoy your dinner here but just be careful they might serve you a roll that has been out for too long!

My fiancé and I come here at least once a week, sometimes more depending on how hectic our day has been or if we are in need of a celebration. We love this place because it beats going to downtown San Mateo and spending precious time trying to find parking. When we look for places to sit down, eat some decent food, and converse, we look at the whole picture. The ambiance is nice, you don't feel rushed to leave, and it feels welcoming. It is right next to the lagoon, so you can take a romantic walk after dinner if you wish. The service is great and very hospitable, Jay is our homie! (Not literally, but, we've gotten to know him because we frequent this place weekly). We normally order the tuna tartare and Godzilla roll, amongst other things. But those two, I recommend. We usually order sake... So of course our experience awesome! It's not necessarily the best sushi in town, that's what Sushi Sam is for. We just love the overall experience. And the music they play!

At first my boyfriend and I were quite excited as we sat down: good location by the water, nice modern atmosphere, good ambience. Our excitement soon petered out as we waited for someone to approach us; there were only 3 other occupied table at this early dinner time so we couldn't figure out what in the world was taking so long. The food was ultimately disappointing. My boyfriend ordered the staple Katsudon; the katsu was soggy on the outside, dry on the inside, interesting combination. The rice underneath it was wet near the top, porridge on the bottom. There were also strange sliced bell peppers next to the pork, which probably didn't help the soggy condition of the bowl. The same strange bell peppers also appeared in my Udon. It just didn't work. Sorry. The "Super California Rolls" came with eel on top, and again, soggy rice. The pieces just tasted like one big mushy mess. My boyfriend downed his cup of soda within 5 minutes of receiving it, and it sat unrefilled throughout our 45 minute dinner. I saw the waitress spare our table glances during the multiple times she passed by but she would just sweep by without a word nor give a chance for us to say anything. Oh well. We were really quite occupied by how appalling the food was to give it that much thought anyway. Water sufficed in the mean time. The extra sushi roll that we didn't order which was corrected during the meal remained on the bill. Waiting around for someone to come by again was too painful so I got up and approached the counter to get it removed. Just a Wednesday night.

Not that great. We had the wakame salad, gyoza, sushi lover combo, and beef sukiyaki. The wakame salad was large, but had an odd flavor. The gyoza was bland. The sushi only had 4 types of fish and while the walu was very good, the rest were underwhelming. The beef sukiyaki was pretty good. The waitress seemed nice but she never looked over so it was very hard to get her attention or even order.

SLOW service (40 minutes for food....seriously?) and what do I get after waiting said 40 minutes? Underwhelming food. First time I had super salty Katsu, bland Karaage and Veg Udong. Definitely not coming back. Should have gone to Cooking Papa next door like I originally planned. Maybe I just caught them at a bad time. Although with tons of restaurants to try (esp. CP next door), it's hard to imagine coming back to this joint.

I do not know how did this place get a 4 star review! This is NOT authentic Japanese! I gave 2 stars for the decor and the fresh hot tea and the OK-service. I am a hardcore Japanese food lover and I decided to come give it a try since I live so close by and this high review always pops on my yelp page. We ordered Uni Nigiri and it was not fresh with a very nasty taste to it we did not finish it. Sushi rolls were soggy and too moist!! Their ika sugata was bland... had no taste to it.. This place is for people who don't know sushi! Ugh.. I will not come back!

A little gem in foster city. Some of the highest quality sushi I had In my years of travel. I recommend anyone to try the golden California roll, and to move down the menu from there. I have gone many times, and in some cases ordered as takeaway - quality preserved!

Solid 3 stars, maybe even a 3.5. The service was good, place was getting packed as we were walking out so they seem to do good business. Menu has a wide variety of things, from sushi rolls to bento boxes to ramen. Ramen was not bad for a shop that doesn't specialize in ramen. The Hamachi poppers are nice and unique. Pink dragon roll was ok, not mind blowing but not bad either. I would come here again as it is in my neck of the woods.

Great place for lunch, ok for dinner. Nice quality standard Japanese food, good value bento boxes, and sushi. Also unique to the restaurant a variety of donburi (rice bowls). I say ok for dinner, because it seems like the menu & quantity of food remains the same as lunch but prices jump up for dinner. At least that was our impression.

Service was very good and so was the food. Prices are reasonable during lunch time. I love sitting on the patio and enjoy Foster City's lagoon.

Nope nope nope. Simply substandard. The tuna was clearly one of these frozen white tuna treated with carbon monoxide for color, and the rice... too hot for sushi. Just say no.

Mango a go go roll! OMG so delicious ORDER it!!! We ordered our usual favorite, the Sashimi plate never fails. This place has one the best and it is only best when it is fresh. The Seared Collection was also really good, lightly seared with sauce! The unfiltered Sake was a perfect pair. :)

Very very slow service!! I came here for team lunch and had to wait for an hour for my food. The quality of the fish is below average when compared to other Japanese restaurants in downtown San Mateo. The Kan Sai lunch combo I got had 6 pieces of sushi. You heard me right, only 6 pieces of sushi for lunch. And it is $13. What a ripoff!! I got another hamachi handroll because I was really hungry, but that is still not enough. I ended up returning to office hungry and paid $25 for my meal (18% gratuity). I won't come here again and will strongly suggest not to come here for authentic Japanese food.

Ambiance: 4 stars Food: 3 stars Service: 3.5 stars A restaurant situated next to the bay water in Foster City. The view is nice outdoors, and the decorations inside complement the ambiance of the restaurant well. I was here for lunch on a Monday, right before they closed for their intermission between lunch and dinner. The service here is a little above average -- no problems here. I ordered the chirashi and my friend ordered their bento box combo. The sashimi I had was amazingly fresh, but the rice was lacking in quality -- in fact, I found it to be really terrible for the amazing fish I was eating. My friend found his pork to be very battered, but the meat quality seemed good. Hopefully, this was just an off-moment since we arrived right before the lunch break. Overall, they offer very fresh and high-quality ingredients, but the preparations could be better. I would not mind coming back here again and giving this place another go.

Light meals should be light on the wallet. This place breaks that rule. It's $$. Ordered the spicy pork over rice and toro sashimi. The spicy pork was stringy but the marinade was good. Slightly oily but that's ok. The toro was not the best...def the weaker point of the meal. Not a high quality cut and below avg size...for the same price as everywhere else. If there werent already hundreds of japanese places, this place would be a solid pick, but with the amount of fierce competition, I cannot give this more than 3 stars

  • Jenny N.

Pretty good place, I like the outdoor seating they have available. I came here for lunch with some coworkers and I had the salmon skin roll and the jalapeno spicy tuna roll, both was okay, nothing amazing. I would add more unagi sauce on the salmon skin roll, or season the salmon skin a bit better. For the jalapeno spicy tuna roll, I would definitely cut the jalapenos smaller and I felt like there was more jalapeno in my roll than spicy tuna.

The sushi: 5 stars. Delicious, unique, quickly made, beautifully prepared, fresh tasting! We sat at the sushi bar and I enjoyed watching the chef make the sushi. Fun! The service: 3 stars. This place is busy, probably due to the excellent food, and therefore the girls seem slightly overwhelmed at all times. You mostly have to flag them down to re-order or ask for refills -- that's a bummer. If you're in a rush, maybe skip this place for now. But definitely go back when you have a little more time. Right on the water, this place is ideal for coworkers, date night, or a girl's night. Tables outside are a great option too.

One of the best sushi places I've visited. I ordered the Fire tuna roll, which was very tasty! Average prices! If you sit outside, you will have a great water front view. Food came out quickly. Great lunch specials. Only negative would be the wait staff is pretty slow, but they are nice.

GREAT lunch spot for sushi! One thing I really like about the sushi is the size of the pieces. They are small enough that you can place the whole piece in your mouth without looking like a ridiculous chipmunk. Nice in situations like being on a date or having lunch with co-workers. Fish is super fresh. I also love that the sushi menu is 3 pages! SO MANY OPTIONS! I tried the double spicy tuna, the firecracker roll, and orange blossom. All three were amazing though I was most inclined toward the firecracker- I love me some spicy! As an appetizer we ordered the lobster rolls which were delicious!! Location is on the waterfront so you can feel the nice breeze around you when they leave their doors open and they also have a couple of tables outside for outdoor seating with a view of the water. Will definitely make this a staple weekday lunch spot!

In the last 2 weeks, I've eaten here, one time for lunch and the other time for dinner. For lunch, I ordered the Kobe Bento Box with chicken teriyaki and tempura. For only $9, it came with miso soup, salad, and a California roll, plenty enough for a quick lunch. My dining companion ordered the Teriyaki Bento Box with salmon teriyaki and sashimi, for only $10. The food came very fast, which was good, because we were in a hurry to get back to work. For dinner, I brought my wife, and we ordered a Cherry Blossom Roll (salmon and avocado top, tuna inside) to share. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki dinner, and she had the Sushi Special. Again, the food came out very quickly, and everything tasted wonderfully. The dining room is small, but very quaint, and the service has been great both times. Very highly recommended!

came here with a friend at lunch. the service was great and fast. our server was very nice to give me ramen noddles instead of soba. the food portion was a lot that we couldn't finish. minus one star cuz the ramen soup was very salty.

nice find in foster city! on the waterfront. cute, quaint spot. had the soba noodles which was well flavored, seasoned, and hot...yummy! would definitely go back for more and try more things. the miso soup was ok. not hot enough for my taste. it's a family run spot from what i can tell. they were attentive and quick to help.

Went there last night for dinner around 7 pm and the place looked busy, so I thought it is a good sign. We ordered: Beef Sukiyaki - hot pot with sliced beef, clear rice noodles and lots of veggies. I did not taste the soup but my friend said it is just an o.k. and the beef was cooked too tough. Rainbow roll - California roll topped with five kinds of raw fish: salmon, tuna, albacore tuna, tai, and ebi. I liked that there was plenty of raw fish, Yet the taste and freshness was not very impressive. Seaweed salad - pretty big portion and was good. The place is a bit small and there is no restroom inside the restaurant. You have to get the key and go out to the shared bathroom at the shopping center next to the hair salon. The ambiance was good, but due to that the place is so small and you can hear neighboring table's conversation, it is probably not a place for intimate, romantic conversation. They do have a big selection of everything on their menu. I may go back to try other rolls and give them another chance.

This is a pretty small restaurant, roughly around 10 tables max. You won't have any views of the lagoon from the seats inside the restaurant, which is a shame because you're right next to it. The interior design of the restaurant is really unique though. The wait to get seated was almost immediate, but the time that it took for the food to arrive on the table after we ordered was quite long. The waitress was very attentive and apologized a few times for the delay. She gave us some edamame while we wait. The portion of the sushi dishes were pretty small comparing with other Japanese restaurants with similar menu and price range. At the end, the waitress gave us some complimentary desserts to apologize once again for the long wait. I would have given them a four star or even a five star if their food quality and size improves.

Love this place for delicious Japanese and Korean food!! The ambiance is inviting and the staff was always checking in on us to make sure we were happy!! Great location for this restaurant, too. It is always nice to be next to the water in Foster City! The fish was fresh and the presentation of each dish made our eyes dance!! We will definitely be back soon to try more wonderful food on their menu!!

We always love this restaurant for the freshest fish. I've been avoiding rice lately but have not felt like I'm missing out because their sashimi is so delicious. The clams in garlic butter are to die for. We ordered take out on Valentine's Day and when we got home were pleasantly surprised to see that there were beautiful chocolate covered strawberries with our food! I've never had a restaurant do anything extra like that free of charge. Come to find out that the owner had hand-dipped over 200 of these strawberries for her customers. What a kind gesture. If you haven't been to this restaurant, you are missing out on the best food, service, and all around great experience.

My husband and I are newly residents to Foster City, so we wanted to try out the different restaurants around town. When I had a craving for Japanese, I saw Kobe Japanese Cuisine and Bar on yelp with pretty good ratings, plus it was near the water, so we decided to try out for a date night. The location was nice and the ambiance inside was pleasant. I ordered the terriyaki beef dinner combo. To my surprise it came out on a sizzling platter. First time I ever had my terriyaki beef come out like that. In addition, it was super good, cooked just right! The place is quite small, so I can see where they can get pretty busy during busy hours. We Will definitely go back again!

We have been here many times with mixed reviews. I think it may be going downhill since at 7pm on a Friday night they had at least five open tables and we were seated right away. In the past, we would have waited quite a while. The sushi rolls and sashimi are great....but from now on I will be ordering only that! I decided to try something different, so got the Ca roll to start, then ordered a rice dish. It was described with having chicken and vegetables. The only vegetables in it were red and green peppers and onions. I was expecting maybe carrots, broccoli, etc. the chicken pieces were questionable. Some tasted ok, others had fat globs in them. The sauce was bland, so I poured soy sauce on it and ate some of the rice, thinking at least I had the Ca roll coming. It never arrived even after reminding the waiter. So....great rolls and sashimi, inconsistent service, don't order anything else!

This place is a bit pricier for rolls than some other restaurants in San Mateo area, but it's a convenient location in Foster City. Service was quick and the server was very nice. We came in for a quick bite to eat. The Delirious Rolls was a Spicy Hamachi roll.. It was definitely a refreshing roll.. A hint of wasabi, sprinkled with tempura of a bit of a crunch, and also topped with fresh seaweed. Cherry Blossom was also a treat. The rolls were small enough to fit into your mouth in one bite! So you were able to get a little of everything. Although miso soup was not on the menu except with bento boxes, the server still brought it out. No questions asked. On the house. Awesome!

This is my 2nd time at Kobe for lunch. Was not disappointed one bit. It's a small place with some outside seating for those warm San Mateo days. We had tuna tartare today that was served over avocado. Delicious and fresh. What I like most at Kobe is their speciality sushi rolls- they are served fast, not over-sized and perfect combos especially if you like your sushi spicy. Love the fact that the parking lot is big and it's free. That's not something I take for granted since I live in the City.

The sashimi in the Sushi Special was not so fresh, except for the salmon one. The two rolls were pretty good - dragon roll and some sort of spicy roll. But definitely not worth the cost, especially when there are better options nearby. For the same price, you can get exceptional quality sashimi and specials at Sushi Sam's in downtown San Mateo.

This place changed ownership a few times and this current one seems to be the most promising yet. I really like the wall behind the sushi bar with the Japanese writings. The table settings are spacious considering. The first time we were there, it was quiet and the waitress was a bit new and slow. The menu has quite a bit to choose from but they didn't have a couple things we ordered, gave us the wrong thing and charged us for things we didn't get. Tried the sake champagne - let's just say I won't recommend - it was flat and sweet. The fish was ok, not the freshest... With all that, it was somehow enjoyable because they had this cool mix of 70's and 80's music so that took us back to the good old days... We have returned and the food has improved and it appears they are getting some business. Their rolls are pretty good deals for the portion and price. The short ribs were also very good. It's a good place to hang with some friends because they won't rush you out.

I have been going to Kobe for years and Jackie, the owner, is extremely personable and warm and makes you feel like you're entering her own fun, personal dining room. Every time I go to Kobe, I see a lot fo the same familiar faces and there is a nice comfort and familiarity to being surrounded by a loyal following. Being a vegan, Kobe is flexible with coming up with creative rolls and they have lots of fresh veggies to choose from. The place gets pretty crowded at night and especially on the weekends, attracting young people drinking lychee sake martinis and families with children alike. I live in San Francisco, but I won't hesitate to drive out to Foster City and eat at Kobe because of it's "Cheers" like environment and excellent food.

my boyfriend and i come here often when i drive down to have lunch with him during work since it's close by. the sushi here is sooooo good : ) and the staff is friendly and service is fast. we especially like to go on sunny warm days so we can sit outside by the water. he always gets the lunch bento box and i always get the sushi sampler plate. it's chef's surprise, but always good and fresh fish.

Tiny place. Thought it was going to be a nicer restaurant and have water front seating. It's your average Japanese restaurant. No water front seating. We had the tempura appetizer, CA Roll, tonkatsu dinner, and teriaki chicken dinner. All of it was good. Nothing spectacular.

Had dinner here last week, giving it 3 1/2 stars rounded up to 4. I had the chicken and beef teriyaki -- the chicken was mediocre, but the beef was very good. My companions had a range of dishes -- all were pretty good. The seafood tempura is huge for the price. We tried one of their sushi rolls and weren't particularly impressed, but maybe we just ordered the wrong thing. The wait staff was also very friendly.

I really like this place - they have the best Bento Box deals. I always get the spicy pork which is very yummy and the sashimi (chef's special which is 2 tuna and 2 salmon). They also give you salad, soup, and 4 small california roll's all for 8.95! The california rolls aren't the greatest and their soup is a little on the salty side, but the sashimi and salad dressing are great. The service is always great and the staff is super friendly.

Had an amazing experience with sushi here. I especially loved the ring of fire roll and my date loved the spider roll. Great ambiance. My only negative was that you had to take a key and walk outside and down the sidewalk to use the restroom. GREAT food and saki though!!

2007, February 11 Last Friday's disappointing experience left me the need to edit my feedback. We felt like Japanese that night. I wanted more of their tempura udon, and misis craved for some of that soft shell crab sushi roll she had weeks prior at Tomodachi in Hayward. We waited for at least 45 minutes for our food to come out PLUS NO SOFT SHELL CRAB ROLL!!! A caveat if you like zaru soba: they claim they bring out the soba dip with the grated Daikon radish and chopped scallions already mixed in. This was a surprise since (a) we usually do that ourselves, and (b) they did not mix them in two Wednesdays ago lunch time. I haven't given up on Kobe. I'd like for us to have dinner there again, but maybe after two or so dinner visits at Tomodachi. Until then... ::: **** Kozy dining experience tonight. The dining room is no bigger than maybe our living room, maybe that and a half. They were nice to put up with me walking in and ordering beef udon for take-out only to change my mind, sat in for some beef sukiyaki and sake, and I'm glad to have the sukiyaki. Do sukiyaki usually come with fresh egg? Regardless, I liked it. I liked it with hot sake. I liked it with hot sake and the music selections they had on--Clapton, The Clash, The Doors, etc. A Japanese eats playing The Doors. I like! Four and a half stars, which means somewhere between most likely and absolutely coming back for more!!! Thank you, Kobe. Love me two times, baby!

Gotta say I'm addicted to the Kobe Bento Box lunch special. There's a couple choices of what you can include but I always go with the Spicy Beef, 4-piece Cali Rolls, and 3 piece sushi. Comes with miso soup, side salad and rice. All for under $10, how can you beat that!

Fun atmosphere. Small intimate setting. Mid-2-High Prices. Decent Rolls. Glad there is an alternative to Tokies (see: yelp.com/biz/txJHFrm0ia0… ) now in Foster City. Cool New (and cute =P ) Owner!!!

I occasionary come to this restaurant for lunch when I am in the area. They are not authentic Japanese, but food is decent, I thought. However, I was very disappointed last week. I went there around 12:30pm. Nobody acknowledged when I entered the restaurant. It was not even busy. The restaurant was about half filled. Sushi chef was apparently busy reading some documents. One of the waitress saw me standing by the enterance, but she did not say anything. Waiter was texting behind the bar (2 feet away from me) and not paying any attention to the floor. I stood there for about 4-5 min, and walked out.

I loved this place and will definitely go back! My co worker told me about this place and one night we decided to go and check it our and were not disappointed. Cozy, contemporary design on the boardwalk section of the Foster City Water Way at Edgewater Place Shopping Center. Go and check it out!

I just love this place. The Sushi bar is awesome. The seafood is always fresh and tastes great. They play great music....not Japanese music ...but its really cool adds to the atmosphere. I've eaten here many times and its nice to get to know the staff and owners. They are good fun and like to see you enjoy yourself! The food, saki and Asahi are always the best.

This place always serves really good rolls and raw items. Since it's small, there are only a few people, including the owner, who help serve the customers. My favorite...is the fire spicy tuna roll. Yumm-o! I'm a big fan of rolls and Kobe offers a nice variety to choose from. I'm not fond of the raw fish, but my husband always finishes his sashimi or other dishes that they offer. Yes, the restroom is down a few stores, but so what! Service is good. I like their hot sake and tea. They do have a good list of cocktails and other good sakes to choose from.

This is my first review on Yelp! Wow, What a restaurant! First, both Lisa and Jackie are the greatest. They remember you and are great at guiding the novice on what to try. Peter and Shawn, the sushi chefs, are true masters. The presentation of the food is beyond words. Let's face it, sushi is all about the presentation and the freshness of the food. Kobe hits the mark on both! The rolls are out of this world, and be brave and try the uni. It's my absolute favorite, with a quail egg! I'm not the type to gush over a restaurant and am always a little leery of giving a recommendation, but Kobe is different! If you have not tried it, do so. You won't be disappointed.

My friend wanted to try because her friend was posting it on FB about how good the ramen and 1 of the appetizer dish was. We were there for lunch, the place was pretty full. When I was reading the menu I notice that they only have 1 Ramen choice and it's a spicy pork ramen. Since my friend doesn't eat spicy food & she wants ramen, she ask the waitress if they can make it non spicy which she confirmed with the kitchen with an answer "yes". When she got the noodles we can see red oil flowing on the surface that looked like chili oil, so she double check with the waitress and the answer she got was " this is the best they can do. The bamboo shoots was marinated in chili oil". WHAT??? If a customer ask a simple question and the kitchen can't do it, just say NO, not bringing out a dish someone cannot eat.the Sukiyaki beef that I ordered was terrible. They charge $13.00 and gave you 5 small pieces of beef with tasteless soup. Will never go back again.

This place may not be operated by Japanese but tastes are good. The place is a bit small and not good to bring baby with stroller. I went there for lunch only once and the price seems higher but amount of food is small.

Kobe's a great work lunch spot. Great lunch specials, fairly speedy/attentive service, and they split checks without a fuss. I'm ashamed to admit that when I eat at Kobe, I revert to Gringo Mode, as I always order a bento box. Their bento boxes, like most, contain a lot of food. Miso soup, salad, California rolls, rice, and then two items of your choosing-all of this for under $10. Their nigiri sushi is ok, their gyoza is pretty palatable, and their spicy pork is pretty delicious. From what I've tasted of their maki sushi though, I can't see myself going here outside of lunchtime with coworkers.

A gem hidden in a strip mall in Foster City. This little place was packed on a Wednesday night. We enjoyed sweet, unfiltered sake while we waited briefly for a spot at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs were delightful and made a special roll for us when I told them it was our first time there. Delicious fresh fish, fun roll combinations, and friendly staff made this a memorable evening. I'll be back!

Highly recommend this restaurant. Bento box is very reasonable price with big portion. Sushi also pretty good. Wait time is slightly longer during lunch time if there are lot of people. If you run out of place to eat, you try this Kobe Restaurant. Recommend for both Beto & Sushi.

On saturday, My friends and I decided to go find a place to go eat sushi. When arriving to this place, it was crowded and the server told us it would be a 25 minute wait. We stayed because of the reputation for the good and reasonably priced sushi. We were ignored and the wait ended up being an hour. Once we sat down, the waiters did not come for another 20 minutes. It was the wort service, and slowest also. The servers were condescending and gave us the wrong orders. I will not be coming back after such a terrible experience.

I used to go to Sushi Monster when I was having a sushi craving, now I go to Kobe. I come here for lunch with my co-workers, they have a really good lunch bento box. I think it's $8.50 for chicken teriyaki with rice, salad, miso soup, california roll and your choice of sashimi, gyoza or tempura. Parking can be tough around lunch time, haven't ever been here for dinner. Sushi rolls seem a little on the pricey side so I stick with the lunch bento and I've never been disappointed.

Now, I grew up in a hawaii and love raw fish, so if I say this is good, you better believe it. The sushi creations are awesome, and the fish itself is so fresh. The best part is that the service is one of the best in the bay area. The staff all help each other and are always making sure everything is going well. Try the foster city roll....

I really liked this place when it was Ichiban. My parents were regulars and the staff knew us very well. It was like family. Now it's Kobe, and, ugh. It's not terrible, but the staff cannot get anything right. I thought maybe because we went on Valentine's day it was busier than usual and they just got flustered but now I have heard not only from yelp but from relatives that the staff is always getting things mixed up. My wife's drink took way too long and they forgot about the tea. Seeing kalbi on the menu was odd, even if it is Korean owned. While the sushi is only average, it is not overpriced like the other new place in FC. I might give it 3 stars for being convenient, but that's because I live within walking distance.

It was my friend's birthday and her friend had suggested trying out Kobe. What a great suggestion. We went there for dinner and had the best time. Not only was the staff super polite and speedy, the food was good too. I love sushi and I get very picky on how rolls are made, but this place was oh sooo yummy. We tried the jalapeno tuna roll, dynamite, spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, and a few more. and they were all really good. I will definately come back.

This place is awesome! We went there last night based on the glowing Yelp reviews and couldn't have been more pleased. The place is tucked away in the corner of the strip mall, which made it a little tricky to find at first. The service was superb-- everyone was so nice, courteous and prompt. The food was fantastic and I especially like that they offer a wide variety of dishes, not just sushi. Great vegetarian and vegan selections too. Prices are reasonable and portions are huge.

My wife and I have been regular patrons of this restaurant and usually have a good dining experience whenever we've come here. However, tonight was definitely an off night. Though it was not busy or crowded, our food was cold and came out later than usual. The background music was too loud and there was an annoyingly loud group of people at one of the other tables. Anyways, we did not enjoy our dining experience here tonight. I don't think we will be coming back here anytime soon.

I LOVE THIS PLACE. The Teriyaki is some of the best I have tasted. It is close to the water so scenic and comfy as well. Their is a wide range of choices including sushi that include for those that prefer veggie to fish and other delicacies. And don't forget Sake cocktails. Go now!

I really want to give this 4.5 stars, because it's true they are a little too slow in bringing out the rolls. Being that said, I don't expect fast food speed here, I want the rolls for a party of 6 to be brought out no more than 5 mins after the first round, not after one round is finished and we're waiting. This gets a lot of props from me because I like sushi rolls, we do go out for shushi for rolls, this place has many choices, including fried rolls. The Rice, fish, veggies & fruits are fresh and they have great sauces that compement their disse, one is a wasabe base, can't put my finger on the other right now. Great neighborhood place, ok for a party of 5 but gets harder for more. It's a small place, so they're not geared up for that as one can obviously see.

I've been going to this restaurant for years. What I really enjoy about the place is that the staff makes the effort to get to know you. It feels more like a neighborhood bar then a restaurant. When it was my birthday, they made me a cake special for me. When I was sad due to a recent job layoff, they gave me free drinks for the night. The sushi is excellent and the chefs are always game to make something new. I always make a point of stopping buy at least once or twice a week.

"OK" is the best description for this restaurant. This is the place to go for sushi when you live in foster city and need sushi. this isn't a place to go when you want great sushi or don't live in the area. The rice is a bit too vinegery and cold and gummy for my tastes (experienced this on 3 visits now), and the fish is fresh, but doesn't have that "wow" factor that really good sushi has. overall it tastes more like "generic peninsula sushi bar." The prices are too high for basic sushi rolls. the pros are - the staff is very nice, polite, and the service is good. so you end up having a nice experience anyways.

  • Adam H.

I go there about 4x's per month. I've found service decent. Cons: I've never had an order wrong, but the sushi usually takes some time to get to the table. I've only seen one sushi roller on duty since I've been going to this restaurant. It is a small restaurant, so normally it's not a problem, but during the rush of a lunch hour, it can take a little time. No bathroom inside. Plus: The food is good. Rolls are very good. Fish is fresh. Tempura is good, as is the chicken teriyaki dinner and spicy pork dinner. They also have a good udon noodle soup. I like the small, cozy atmosphere. Neutral: Dinner Pricing; you won't get a deal nor will you get ripped off. Go for the lunch specials if you are price sensitive. Comparison: In my opinion, it's better than Tokie's.

the WORST ever. First of all, the bathroom...what bathroom? OMG it is outside, you have to find it...its down the sidewalk past a couple businesses...I was NOT in the mood to hunt down a restroom when I went out to a LEISURELY LUNCH. So I didnt find it and went back in to the restaurant, disgusted. The food is a little overpriced for the quality; the teriyake salmon was dry. The california rolls were terrible. To add to this awful experience, they were playing this old school 80's hip hop. Not very nice to add to the ambience of the place. Forget it. They do not even get a second chance. I like my bathrooms inside anyway, thank you.

not only is the best little neighborhood restaurant we have, it's the freshest Japanese food around! Their numerous, creative rolls are something I crave on a regular basis! The owners/servers are friendly, fun and delightful!

Kobe just recently changed ownership. I loved the rolls here before, but now the place is spectacular. The decor is much nicer, with large squares of handmade paper tiling the walls, and dark wood finishes. The sushi rolls average about $9-$11 and they are huge. One roll is more than enough for one person. The fish is fresh, and the rice is so soft it melts in your mouth. The presentation was beautiful. All three rolls we had were superb, especially the tempura rolls. I can't wait to go back.

I was here early on a Thursday night. Quick service, nice staff. Mediocre sushi. No wasabi on the rice under my fish, and the fish was not very fresh. I may go back but only because it is the closest sushi to my place.

I will have to disagree with most people and their bad review. I have tried many sushi places in foster city and san mateo. This place is small and cozy. sure the fact they dont have bathroom. but come on. anyhow. The price of the sushi is decent. The quality of the fish is good, fresh and tasty. It is the best Sushi place in Foster City, and maybe san mateo. They have good cocktails too.

The sushi rolls served here are super tasty!.......... Wrapped with fresh, creative ingredients.......... unique names......... and first class service......... The owners really make you feel at home............ Its like the japanese version of cheers with a hot female version of Ted Danson (doesn't resemble Ted Danson at all)........... Not only is the service great but the waitresses are beautiful marinated with kindness and a sweetened dry rub........... Mix in the feel and tranquility of the lagoon and you'll be happy............ A great environment for an intimate dinner........ or a conversation with your buddy who lost their shirt in the stock market....... If I were a hobbit in lord of the rings......... and I just completed a long journey.......... with a growling belly.......... This is where I'd go.......... Good Area.... Good People........ Good Vibes...........Good Sushi.......

one of the not many japanese places open on a monday. i used to dislike this place because an appetizer i used to order regularly was prepared very badly one day. i was very put off by that experience. but i've gotten over that and like their rolls. I love their big, tasty, seafoody salads. my brother ordered a mojito once that was not that good. there's a roll with baked scallop and salmon on top that i absolutely LOVE.

Could this be my NEW FAVORITE SUSHI PLACE?! I think it just might be! For the first time since we moved to the Peninsula, Zak & I FINALLY had a hankerin for some sushi... Thanks to Yelp we found Kobe! Zak said it was the CLEAR choice just around the corner in Foster City. "We live around the corner from Foster City now?!???" I asked. Obviously I am still getting familiar with our new stomping grounds, hee hee. Located in the corner of a sweet little eclectic shopping center that is REALLY easy to get to - you'll find Kobe! From our parking spot I saw how quaint of a place this was. They had Christmas lights hanging in the windows and some eucalyptus stalks lining the windows as well creating a magnificently romantic vibe. Greeted right as we entered with a Japanese welcome by all the staff and promptly seated in the corner by the window... All the other people who entered after us had a quick and clever japanese reply to the greeting. After witnessing this several times we concluded that we need to pay closer attention to the things being said so we can have a quick japanese reply like everyone else. You know, since we plan to become regulars here too . =0) Zak commented that it felt like we were first dating again... The feeling in here was so romantic - might have had something to do with the lighting and the whimsical music playing, but I immediately agreed with him. He said it was like our 3rd date all over again. To which I blushed and said "oh, 3rd date? That means we're gonna have sex!!" They have a deliciously full selection of things Japanese to enjoy. It took me a moment to decide if I was going to stick with my Sushi craving or if I wanted to switch gears and order a traditional Japanese Steakhouse dish. Decisions decisions! Our server was fantastic! We never felt overwhelmed with check-ins and were never left wanting. She came at just the right moments and was very sweet. I got the Miso soup (always a staple) which was different and had those little almost spaghetti like cap mushrooms in it. Different and delectable! YUM! We also ordered a salad that I cannot remember the name of right now... Dynamite something? If you are not a fan of cucumbers or tomatoes like Zak, then you might want to avoid ordering this salad. hee hee I had to take one for the team and rescue him from both. The Baby Ball Roll was SO GOOD! Spicy Tempura Scallops with Cream Cheese and spicy sauce in a soy wrap - THE BOMB! I could have eaten 2 orders of it for sure! The other rolls we had were so fresh and yummy too, but the GRANDE FINALE was the Tempura Green Tea Ice cream. The presentation was so fun too! Drizzled in chocolate sauce and cut into 4 pieces perfect for the two of us. I enjoyed a TRULY exquisite glass of Sake too! Yakamanote or something - It boasts watermelon flavor and a full bodied taste with a bitter finish in the description - you won't miss it on the menu. $9 for a glass and worth EVERY cent. I will be back again soon to see the name of it because I've never tasted a Sake that I could sip like a fine wine before. So smooth & delicious! I'd like to have a bottle at home. MmmMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm, Kobe, I do believe I'm in love!

They should call this place the "litto sushi restaurant". Cuz that's what you get here: a litto restaurant serving litto sushi. The nigiri is litto -- thin and small slices. The rolls were also litto -- very compact so you can order more. The bill, however, was not so litto. The prices on the rolls seemed like a dollar too high. "No big deal," I was thinking. Maybe the quality is high or they used good ingredients. As it turns out, the extra dollar probably went into the micronization... er... litto-ization of the rolls. One good thing about the rolls tho, was that they did taste pretty good. But when value and quality intersect, Kobe is nowhere to be found.

Sushi is ok. I've had better, especially for the price. Service is horrible. The female waitress is RUDE! I would think the only thing worth getting from here are their lunch bento boxes. Don't order the tofu salad. It's not worth $8. I won't be coming back here anymore.

First timer. Went for dinner with my wife and wasn't impressed. Edamame was soggy and limp, like it had been boiled hours ago and then sat under a heat lamp. Good selection of sushi and rolls. Quality was good, not great. Service was mediocre. Will not return anytime soon.

Second time here, and we decided to get the golden California roll! I heard about how good it was so I decided to stop by for a late dinner! We ordered 2 golden ca rolls to eat in, ($7each) and one to go. It was around 8:30pm and we didn't get our food until 9:30 when we decided to take it to go! Then they just threw it all In one box, so rude! Overall it was yummy but the service sucked!

  • James B.

Meh. That pretty much captures my feelings on my meal there. It was lunch time so I can understand it not being their A game, but was just underwhelmed. I got the Bento box with short ribs/sashimi and my wife got the Bento with the spicy pork/suhi. The meat was probably the best part of the meal but it was definitely well below Soon Korean BBQ in quality, so to me there doesn't seem to be a reason to return. Sashimi/Sushi was pretty bad, but for $9/10 a box I wasn't expecting anything amazing. I think they use fake crab in the california rolls as it was more mayo tasting than anything else. Most of the 5 star reviewers don't seem to be Asian, which to me is a bit of red flag. I'd give this one a miss and head to San Mateo if you're craving sushi.

This was the second time that I visited this place. I ordered the Teriyaki bento box. To my disappointment, they did not clean the lettuce leaves and there was sands on the leaves. They did not meet even the basic sanitization standard for the dish. This was disappointing.

Hands down one of thee best places I've ate at for Japanese food.. I love the Hawaiian touch they add to there rolls,(I've never had a sushi place make cocunut shrimp in a roll and now I'm spoiled and wont go anywhere else for sushi),but all of the rolls I've tried have all been equally delicious! Ive also had there udon soup, the flavor of the broth and the fresh vegetables they put in along with the yummy udon noodles, is simply heaven! Now for the teriyaki, they have the most amazing teriyaki I've ever eaten (my moms Japanese so I know good teriyaki) but they serve it on a HOT skillet (first time I've had it served like that) and it is to die for!! The service is really good and the music of choice they play is awesome...Its in a small area by Lucky's and its right on the water. You definitely gotta give this place a try, it was recommended to us and now it's the only place we go!

Came here for dinner on a whim because we wanted Japanese and figured we'd check this place out since our friends had been before. The place is super tiny and their portions are as well. For the price you pay, I would have expected the portions to be bigger. I don't really care for restaurants, especially Japanese restaurants where what you pay for is the presentation of food, and this is one of those places. My husband ordered the unagi donburi and it seemed like there were only three small slices of bbq'ed eel on top of this massive plate/bowl looking thing, most of his order was just rice. We also ordered a sashimi appetizer and I tell you we got 3 pieces of sake, and 3 pieces of another fish (maybe yellowtail or escolar) for $14 bucks. Are you kidding me right now? I ordered the beef udon, the broth was lacking flavor, and being that it was beef udon, you would think they would include more beef and not fill the bowl with just veggies. Boring!! Nothing special to remember about this place at all, nor do I care to go back. Waste of money for the quantity of food, spend a lil more or maybe even about the same and just go to Tokie's, that's the better choice, better food, better quality. I honestly don't understand the high ratings that this place is getting. I've been to plenty of sushi joints/Japanese restaurants that are by far way better than this place. Just sayin'! If you want to pay for small portions of food and NOT THAT GREAT a quality of sushi, then I guess this may be your spot!

Ordered the vegetable soba with an egg. Broth was bland, noodles overcooked, and there was a serving's worth of chicken pieces at the bottom of the bowl (the chicken tasted 'off' and had rubbery texture). Egg was in pieces -- big chunks of egg white and chunks of hard-boiled egg yolk. Service was nice, but I won't come back again.

Very disappointing. Sukiyaki was not hot. Sushi had no taste. Donburi was tasteless. They forgot one of our entrees. Will not come back.

A gal pal from San Diego was visiting for the week for work and we wanted to make as much catchup time as possible. Fortunately she as a really sweet meal expense account which made it pretty much open season on dinner. Price being no object, we decided to get some delectable Japanese food at a place called Kobe, in Foster City. We started off with a fried seafood platter, which was oddly served in an onion ring bowl and served with a light tempura dipping sauce. I thought it was a little bit oily and could have spent a little time on a drying rack or something. We also shared the seaweed salad which was delicious and went by quickly. I ordered the udon/sushi combo, which came with an assortment of basic sushi and sashimi (about 14 pieces I think) and a gigantic bowl of udon noodles and side of shrimp tempura. The meal was also served with miso soup and salad as well. The sushi slices were a little on the small side, but fair considering the rest of the meal. The udon noodles were enormous and there were lots of veggies and tofu in the tasty broth. It was easily enough for 3 people to enjoy. My friend ordered the fried pork rolls, which were also filled with cream cheese. It kind of actually reminded me of a jalapeno poppers actually. She also ordered a roll with spicy tuna and a beautiful hamachi sushi. Service here is excellent and the dishes were delicious and beautiful. They've got some lovely waterside tables where you can enjoy your meal with your dog which is always a plus. I can't wait to go back and try more of their rolls. Thank goodness for expense accounts! Food: 9/10 Service: 9/10 Price: $$$ Atmosphere: 8/10

A lot of people at lunch time. However, the lunch bento is just average. The spicy pork was way to spicy. The 3 thin thin slices of sushi was pathetic. The quality is below the average of Bay Area Japaneses lunch bento. I'm not saying it's bad; it's just between A-OK and Won't go back.
